Washington Post: Can Americans ditch guns the way we ditched cigarettes?
The Washington Post ^ | 05/21/18 | Petula Dvorak

Posted on 05/21/2018 1:54:57 PM PDT by Simon Green

Not that long ago, cigarettes were completely woven into American culture. The Marlboro Man, posters telling us that “more doctors smoke Camels than any other cigarette,” even the armrests on planes and all our cars were designed for smokers.

And now? Not so much.

Can it work like that with guns?

(snip)

I grew up surrounded by cigarette smoke. My dad smoked. So did practically everyone else I knew.

But my kids? Totally different.

They saw someone smoking in a restaurant while we were traveling abroad recently and they freaked out, like they’d witnessed a beheading.

Inconceivable in their world.

No they can’t-not while criminal felonious gangs have AK47s, and there are people who want to do harm to others-they are needed for self defense. Beyond that they are needed to protect against invasion and tyrannical governments.

If a person stepped on a nail and the wound became infected, and they had a fever. Would the appropriate treatment be to take an aspirin for the fever? No the cause of the fever has to be treated.

The gun is not the cause of the problem. People are.

Deport people who are here illegally especially violent ones, incarcerate violent criminals and keep them locked up, and change the culture back to Father knows best and the Beaver-where problems are solved by discussion, and not blowing someone’s head off.

And stop giving susceptible youngsters SSRIs that can cause homicidal ideation. Find a test that tells whether that side effect is likely - especially for kids. Monitor all patients on them closely, especially at the beginning, end, or change of medication.

Further more, stop the media circus all day long and hours per day-deny the attention seekers their claim to fame - just encourages copy cats. That’s my 2 cents.

I have to laugh at this, given that smoking was so much part of the media’s culture until only about in the last twenty years.

Nope...in fact I installed a center console gun vault in my F150 which holds my AR15, a couple of pistols, a 1st aid kit, and my spare ballistic vest.

It is my AMEX....don’t leave home without it.

Inconceivable in their world.

Thank you for admitting that the undeveloped child brain and adult liberal brain is one and the same. The world that the left has given us and the world that they want to bring us is EASILY conceivable and is documented.

I've never had any use for cigarettes whereas firearms are of pivotal importance to me.

But I will give some thought to giving up my firearm when the Obamas, the Gores and the Zuckerbergs publicly announce that they're giving up their armed protection details.

And not a moment before.

Can it work like that with guns?

only a leftard would be so stupid to make a moral equivalence between an instrument of self defense that saves lives and a toxic chemical that destroys lives.

Just thought you'd like to know.

We did.

No gun ads on TV.

And very few people whip out their guns in restaurants.

People aren't standing around with their guns on cold days outside office buildings that don't allow guns inside.

Men don't go around in bars with clips in their pockets ready to offer to load women's guns.

And even Petula's dad isn't cleaning, loading, and shooting his gun every night in front of the TV like he used to.

So yeah, battle won.

But this does raise a question: are federal health warning labels on guns coming?

Seem to recall the campaign that “got rid” of smoking moved through media, tort, and schools (can remember yakking BS at my parents, parroting all the drek from school). In that instance a legal product with damaging effects (known and unknown), and a completely voluntarily used product, had all advertising stripped from media, lawsuits against the producers, and its perception altered in the general consciousness.

In demographics, this is a shift in the ‘Overton Window.’

In America, it has been happening since the public schools became the preeminent route for indoctrinating children.

Is it any surprise that 20somethings have a higher regard for socialism than their parents? There is general acceptance of government programs as “rights?” The current spate of sippy cup holding, self-entitled, self-righteous puppies flapping their gums about that which they know little but ‘feel’ much?

Though the compost barely qualifies as fishwrap/catbox-birdcage liner/toilet paper, the idea that “smoking=bad/guns=bad” as a premise, the further movement of the overton window, enough to make serious inroads against the the right guaranteed in the Second Amendment is not outside the realm of possibility....

In the words of Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam

“...get out of my mind!...”

Stay sharp

Ditch the 2nd Amendment? Hey, WaPo, let’s just keep it simple and go sequentially and start with the 1st.

What do you think?
