Michigan residents will likely be paying more for their electricity after a well-funded ballot initiative prompted the state’s largest utilities to adopt higher renewable energy usage.
On Friday, DTE Energy and Consumers Energy — Michigan’s two biggest utility companies — announced a compromise with a ballot committee to dramatically increase their renewable portfolio standards. DTE and Consumers have agreed to establish a goal of at least 50 percent clean energy by 2030, which includes a pledge that 25 percent of their electricity sales originate from renewable sources by that same year. In return, Clean Energy, Healthy Michigan will essentially drop its campaign to require at least 30 percent of a provider’s electricity sales come from renewable energy by 2030.
The agreement raises the bar for electricity providers in Michigan. Under the state’s current mandate, utilities were expected to reach 15 percent renewable energy by the end of 2021.

Under the current system, utility company NV Energy — which serves 1.3 million customers — has a monopoly on the state’s electricity. Monopolies are typically frowned upon in a normal market because it removes the benefits of competition, which include choice and competitive pricing. Nevada law, however, permits monopolies by private utilities for providing power.
In addition to encouraging investment in what used to be a smaller state, such monopolies also aim to reap the benefits of scale, which theoretically lowers costs. To further ensure market fairness, the state also tasks the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada with keeping an eye on rates by approving any rate hike proposed by the utility.

Shouldn’t Michigan be spending money on the Flint water supply?
What is the cost of renewables? 7-10 x cost of conventional sources? Plus they are not dependable so you still have to have conventional capacity to back it up?
Michigan? I guess a few frozen bodies is worth pushing a political agenda.

Wind power costs 8.2 cents per kWh.
Natural gas costs only 6.3 cents per kWh.
Flint residents should fix their own water, just like everyone else in the state does.
Republicans need to get out of sleep mode and hit the energy cost issue continually wherever these renewables mandates exist.

So there really was no danger of another initiative passing, & yet these energy companies folded & agreed to ridiculous new standards. I wonder who got bought off to make it happen?
Those ugly wind mills are all over the place in north east Michigan. I hate them.
Between the Feds and the State, Flint has received over 100 MILLION dollars to repair “bad” water lines.
People who live there still do not trust Flint city water, and are still receiving donated bottled water.
Another problem Flint has is that water customers are refusing to pay their water bills.
BTW- there are almost 100 communities in Michigan that have water quality WORSE than Flint’s.
Thank you for that information. Why isn’t the water situation being addressed in Michigan? Or is it the tip of the iceberg, a situation that exists in many parts of the country?
I believe that there is so much corruption and incompetence going on not only at the state and local levels, that there is no way to rectify this problem. (still a Good Ole Boy network run state)
The trials for local officials are still moving ahead slowly, but there is almost no media coverage. Higher State and Federal officials are not likely to be prosecuted at all.( although a couple of flunkies have been found guilty I believe)
My own community used to send out a bi-annual report on water quality. I haven’t received one for years.

All 2018 testing for Flint, Michigan has lead levels at or under 4PPB. The Federal action level is 15PPB. From a chart I can't find right now only three testing stations had higher lead levels and they actually were at or under the 15PPB level. The city of Philadelphia currently has much higher lead levels as well as many other large cities across the US.
The population of Flint is mostly minorities and they do not want to go back to using city water because they get their bottled water for free, and anything free is something to keep. I have seen their attitudes as getting their free stuff is getting over on "The Man."
