THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
JEROME KERN
The Twenties constituted the greatest decade in American musical theater, and Jerome created at least one show every year for the entire decade. His first show was The Night Boat, which ran for more than 300 performances in New York.
THE NIGHT BOATGeorge made quite a bit on money playing piano for the piano rolls that constituted the major form of home entertainment before radio. This is George having fun with a colleagues song, working it up ragtime style.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
JEROME KERN
Later in 1920, Jerome wrote the score for Sally. Staged by Florenz Ziegfeld, it ran for 570 performances, one of the longest runs of any Broadway show in the decade.
SALLYOnes first impulse is to sing, Look for the union label, which uses the same structure but alters the tune into a march. I dont know if Kern would have approved.
This is from the Publius Museum of Music, and this 1921 recording made it to the top of the charts. You can clearly hear the tuba substituting for a string bass. The lyrics are borne of the carnage of World War I.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
JEROME KERN
SALLYSally was turned into a film in 1929 by Warner Brothers, and this is a rare clip from the movie. Note that the singing style is still operatic. While the lyrics are rather banal, here you can follow Kerns beautiful melody.
