Its a conundrum that has stumped scientists for centuries, but now researchers say they have taken a tantalising step forward in the quest to tackle the common cold.
The scourge of workplace, home and school playground, the common cold is predominantly caused by the rhinovirus. But attempts to thwart the pathogen by vaccination or antiviral drugs face a number of difficulties not least because the virus comes in many forms and can mutate rapidly leading to drug resistance.
But now scientists say they have discovered a way to nobble the virus that could one day help those with conditions such as asthma and cystic fibrosis, for whom a cold is not merely a nuisance but a serious health risk.
The trick, the authors say, is to develop drugs that interact with one of the enzymes within our cells an approach that makes it harder for the virus to become drug-resistant.

Unfortunately, your brain blows up.
Well the aliens from ‘war of the worlds’ will be glad to know that. ;-)
We call it “bourbon”.
You try it first.
cyanide?
I wonder what role the common cold has in keeping our immune systems functioning properly...seems like trying to stop everything that can inconvenience us may end up causing more harm...seems like our natural defenses are more adaptable than a lot of the vaccines which only seem to affect certain strains of what they are used against.
I take 500 mg Vitamin C and it never progresses beyond a sniffle.
Highly undervalued...
There isn’t an illness known to man that this won’t stomp out in mere minutes.
CYANIDE
You’re absolutely right. It drains our sinuses, makes our lungs work overtime, and makes momma cook up that chicken soup. And you get a little extra rest...which may be needed in the usual cold time....winter.
Sold under its generic name of "Single Malt".
or it’s made out of pot
An old Space 1999 episode dealt with that question. IIRC, the Alphans were more susceptible to infections, etc because they lived in a sterile environment which had weakened their immune system.

Some of these new remedies the A.I is trying to get me to take...
I think I’ll take the cold.
Like having a runny nose. People take 'medicine' to make it stop, and only harm themselves.
Thieves oil.
If I feel a cold coming on, we head over to the nearest Pho seller and have a bowl of pho. Yum! It works every time.
The Echinacea and zinc in natural remedies like Zicam in combination with 500-1000 mg of Vita C works great, too-I’m one of those who believes we humans have overused drugs, hand sanitizers, allergy remedies, etc to the point that germs are resistant and our immune systems weakened. I’m glad I have stayed away from the drugs, including OTC allergy remedies-I do keep hand sanitizer in the console of my vehicle-there are sometimes icky things on jobsites that son’t need to leave with you...
I’m not adverse to having a short cold from time to time.
I very seldom get sick, so it’s an interesting experience when I do.
There are times when I go literally years without any ailments, even minor ones.
