A radical cleric who led militia into bloody battles with coalition forces in Iraq is on course to win the country's election.
Firebrand Iraqi Moqtada al-Sadr formed the Mahdi Army in 2003 which was responsible for bloodshed on the streets of Basra and the shooting down of coalition planes.

This may be a good thing. This could make him more publicly visible and vulnerable to a mission to take him out. I think he may have made our President’s to do list for June.
So ah he’s doing it all with rhetoric is he...?
Wait. Whuut? Were we colluding to interfere in another country's election?
This headline is all over the internet & it’s misleading. It’s the coalition that he’s a spokesperson for that is winning.
That being said, he is loyal to Iran, as is the coalition that is in 2nd place, so in effect the IRI will be choosing the next prime minister of Iraq since they will be the majority in parliament.
A democracy with individual liberty and free elections is an intolerable condition to the followers of Islam. Why does this fact keep eluding the world?
mookie should of been popped in the head inside the walls of his Mosque. Our guys had a bead on him more than once and were denied action by the Pentagon - directly.
I hate that little bastard. First, he killed our troops. Secondly, he is backed by Iran which ain’t good. Boy those free elections in a Muslim country went well, what could go wrong?
Actually, the voter turnout is being reported as about 40%. There was a nationwide boycott - some because they don’t like any of the candidates/coalitions and see them all as crooks & thugs, and some because they don’t like the complicated voting system which doesn’t allow a real individual to run - he must be part of a coalition.
Why does this fact keep eluding the world?
A little reformation is needed...
Are you insane?
If he wins, al-Sadr will be the democratically elected leader of Iraq.
Under what twisted globalist logic does that make him eligible for assassination?
Because regime change has worked so well up to this point? (sarcasm)
Exactly what was gained by the Bush invasion of Iraq? Elimination of non-existent WMD’s? Other nations actually have them, why not invade them? I never could figure this out. Saddam was no saint, but what ME leader really is? At least he kept the Iranians at bay.
I think the overall situation actually worsened at the expense of American lives and money. Not to mention the surviving veterans that have to live with battlefield emotional and physical issues for life.
The Bush bunch is no better than Clintons or obama.
Saddam’s revenge?
So.. 4,600 American troops lives for this, eh?
So Iran is colluding with a political party/s campaign in Iraq? Somebody tell the Washington Post.
What was gained by the Obama invasion of Libya?
Why isn’t he in prison??
To be honest George W’s gang in Washington were saying “today Iraq, tomorrow Iran” and we will find out if Donald J. Trump will take the next step to fulfill that vision.
His speech last week regarding Iran and withdrawal from the nuclear deal pointed in that direction.
It may not involve a lot of ground troops but a lot of airpower and a special forces supported insurgency along the lines of Libya and Syria.
Making the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia the seat of Islam great in the Middle East again.
Rumsfeld wanted to take action against him & Iran. He was told no. I think Powell, Rice and other advisors around Bush convinced him not to give the okay... I believe it was the biggest mistake of Bush’s presidency.
