~ Hall of Heroes ~ Leroy A. Mendonca Info from here. |
|
Leroy A. Mendonca was born in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii, on 2 August 1932, and is of Portuguese ancestry. While attending President William McKinley High School, he was a AJROTC cadet, and graduated in 1950 as a soldier in the United States Army during the Korean War. He posthumously received the Medal of Honor for his actions on July 4, 1951. |
Rank and organization: Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company B, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division Place and date: Near Chich-on, Korea, July 4, 1951 Entered service at: Honolulu, T.H. Birth: Honolulu, T.H. G.O. No.: 83, September 3, 1952 Citation:
Sgt. LeRoy A. Mendonca, distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry above and beyond the call of duty in action against the enemy. After his platoon, in an exhaustive fight, had captured Hill 586, the newly won positions were assaulted during the night by a numerically superior enemy force. When the 1st Platoon positions were outflanked and under great pressure and the platoon was ordered to withdraw to a secondary line of defense, Sgt. Mendonca voluntarily remained in an exposed position and covered the platoon's withdrawal. Although under murderous enemy fire, he fired his weapon and hurled grenades at the onrushing enemy until his supply of ammunition was exhausted. He fought on, clubbing with his rifle and using his bayonet until he was mortally wounded. After the action it was estimated that Sgt. Mendonca had accounted for 37 enemy casualties. His daring actions stalled the crushing assault, protecting the platoon's withdrawal to secondary positions, and enabling the entire unit to repel the enemy attack and retain possession of the vital hilltop position. Sgt. Mendonca's extraordinary gallantry and exemplary valor are in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Army.
In 2001, the Bob Hope-class roll on roll off vehicle cargo ship USNS Mendonca was commissioned in the Military Sealift Command, and named in honor of Sergeant Mendonca. |
Please remember the Canteen is here to honor, support and entertain our troops and their families. This is a politics-free zone! Thanks for helping us in our mission! |

*sigh*
I spent HOURS at Wally world buying toys for Tigermaus.
In the last 30 minutes, he has all but destroyed the little pup tent type hidey hole thing, he has manged to put holes in it, and it is forlornly listing to the right in the kitchen.
Then I had him play with this battery operated thing that fits on top of his scratch post, (which he has long since destroyed) it swings a little gray pom pom around in a circle. He hauled it off the machine and took off with it like a shot.
His favorite toy is a small hand held dust mop like thing that I bought for me, to clean our computer keyboards with.
And a Happy Mothers Day to all!

Dave Ramsey’s show was on the Nashville talk radio station for a long time but isn’t now. In the early days, he did his broadcast from his house here.
If our son’s into his methods, I can see he’d knock out the payments fairly quickly.
But if you moved up there, who’d take care of Ghost? :-)
There are daily tiffs with the cats but they’re brief. Lily, though, gets in a mood and won’t stop. Today was one of those days.
I give Harry ad Meghan a year, tops. That gal is not going to like doing things the way they’ll force her to and she’ll be outta there. This is all a fantasy to her and nothing more. Reality won’t sit well with that spoiled brat.

LOL! Now you know why I don’t spend money on toys for our kittehs. Ours have more fun with bottle caps of milk jugs and Coke bottles than anything else and there’s a constant supply of those. They eventually knock them underneath furniture and every now and then I’ll grab a yardstick to rake them out.
Other than Tigermaus destroying all his new toys, I hope you had a good day!

He is SO spoiled!
It was entertaining, I’ll give him that!
The battery operated toy has been put away, for supervised play time tomorrow!
Yes, it was a good day, thanks!
I hope yours was, too!

It’s easy to spoil them, no doubt. I used to until we ended up with so many destructive ones. I got tired of wasting money on toys they’d either destroy immediately or simply not be interested in.
Bottle caps interest them a lot, and a couple of them like to play fetch with them. They weren’t taught, just started doing it on their own.
They also love bubbles and the laser dot.
All stuff they can’t destroy. :-)
Glad it was a good day for you. I hope things don’t get too crazy at work tomorrow. Never know how things will go there.
It was a good day here. Dindu much o’ nuttin’. LOL
Got a bit worn out at the museum yesterday so kicked back today.

YAY! Very good.
Hey, the box for your sister is a good place to put a PostIt note to remind yourself to get grass seed while you’re out. LOL

We have a laser dot for him, too.
It amuses me that he loves that stupid dust mop style hand held thing.
He struts around the house with it like it is his prey!
I had to buy another one and hide it!
He has enough toys now to last him a year, I think!

The laser dot is great because you can eventually wear them out, running them all over the room, while you sit and relax. LOL
Good idea getting another mop thingie to hide for your use and letting him keep his “prey”.

ROFL!! Give that kitty an empty box and a milk carton lid and he’ll be the happiest cat in the neighborhood. They don’t seem to do well with people-made toys.
My kitties love a bit of this or that or a feather, but real toys? Meh!

I’m kind of thinking that, too. She’s already had one divorce for whatever reason and that family is very oppressive to English girls, much less a headstrong, spoiled American one. Can you just see her calling the queen a racist the first time she has to be stern to her? LOL!
