Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.) announced Friday new legislation aimed at holding border patrol and customs enforcement agents accountable for questioning the immigration status of train and bus passengers.
The Department of Homeland Security Accountability and Transparency Act (DATA), would mandate that officers with Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) formally maintain records of each time they question a passenger.
Keeping our country safe cannot come at a cost to basic human rights. When border patrol agents stop and question people in New York and in many places across the country, they arent keeping data about why they targeted a particular person or what happened during their encounter, Gillibrand said in a statement Friday.
DATA would also require border and immigration agents to log detailed information on patrol stops made outside of international security checkpoints, as Gillibrand cited the agencies' broad authority to check vehicles within the vast 100-mile U.S. border zones.
The DHS would then have to log the information, including the reason for the stop and whether force was used, in a database accessible to the public.
The bill, co-sponsored by Sens. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), Tom Udall (D-N.M.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), has drawn the support of liberal civil rights and immigration advocacy groups such as the ACLU and the Southern Border Coalition at a time when the Trump administration is taking an aggressive approach to immigration enforcement.
Social media has been flooded in recent months with videos and stories of random checks where travelers are quizzed about their immigration status.
President Trump last month authorized the National Guard, at the recommendation of the DHS, to aid in border security along the U.S.-Mexico border.
Make a list....yeh, the illegals who slip by will love that.
Will never pass......................she’s grandstanding................
How about a bill preventing District Attorneys in NY from being degenerate perverts and abusers? Can we have that?
Exactly, can you imagine the paperwork and time consumed with something like this?
As Red Badger says, she’s grandstanding and I agree but this is just a waste of time in the Senate.
So I guess that means we can stop calling them “undocumented” immigrants? And go back to the old name, “illegal aliens?”
Lilliputians, out of Gulliver’s Travels trying to tie down a giant with small ropes.
I thought several videos came out during the O years as well?
Support Free Republic, Folks!
But don’t put down whether they’re a citizen or alien on a census form....as in years gone by.
She would make a great POTUS with ideas like that.
Cant be questioning illegals about their status...that would be wrong.
Just another effort by US legislators to try to undermine the rule of law and benefit fraudulently documented foreigners at the expense of the citizens.
BOTH parties have been doing it for decades.
Bush League Republicans must become extinct politically.
They just keep digging and digging and digging! I think the 2018 elections may wind up being like no other:-)
Shouldn’t she be proposing legislation requiring her and her political pals to identify all their brothers who sexually and physically abuse their subordinate females...
She knew, and knows what these animals do.
All this useless waste of a salary ever does is come up with libtard bills like this, granting protection to invading criminals who come here to suck up every conceivable type of taxpayer dollars while ignoring the needs of citizens. I wish she could be defeated in the next election, but there never seems to be a viable R candidate.
Not a very good idea, could backfire on her.
Just find an enterprising young guy or gal with a bureaucratic twist of mind to create a “CHECK THE BOX” type of form.
Just interview about 10 or 12 ICE or Immigration agents and find out what they use for tells, and the general questions they ask suspect immigration violators.
About 50 to 100 questions, or noticeable tells, in a yes or no check the box format.
Such as:
1: Did the suspect try to suddenly leave the area when
the agent appeared.
2: Was the suspect dressed in a manner that was unusual
for the area and time of day.
3: Could the suspect speak English in a standard manner.
4: Could the suspect provide proper identification that a
regular police officer ask for in the performance of
his duties.
5: Could the suspect give a residencial address when
asked, without an unreasonable pause for thought.
I lived in So Cal for many years and got to the point where I could spot an ILLEGAL from 50 meters, and if I spoke to them, in about 2 sentences.
They are not that hard to pick out, and if all you have to do is check off about 50 or a 100 boxes, it shouldn’t take more than 3 to 5 minutes.
A news site here in NJ called them something like “unauthorized immigrants” - and the comments section was flooded with people mocking and attacking them for it. The Anglo leftists that run these sites don’t seem to understand that these “unauthorized immigrants” will be using their Obamaphones to get news from Telemundo and such - they have no use for Americans in that sector.
