In Spring Hill, early 20th Century houses look out over cinematic views of downtown Pittsburgh. The front of 36-year-old resident Randal Millers home appears fine, but the back is a mess. Part of it was slammed by a landslide this February.
Landslides have always been an issue for the city due to its steep hills, clay soil and narrow valleys, but they usually occur in late spring and early early summer. Winter is typically Pittsburghs driest period, which is good, because the soil at that time is very wet as plants have yet to sprout and pull water from the ground.
However, 2018 has been Pittsburghs wettest start to the year on record. February in particular was exceptionally rainy with higher than average higher temperatures.
When we see an incredibly wet February like we had, thats superimposed on soils that are already wet, and that sort of put in motion a whole sequence of damaging landslides, said Francis Ashland of the U.S. Geological Survey.
Climate change models show that not only is it getting warmer, but weather patterns are becoming more extreme. That means wet places are getting wetter and dry places drier. More water evaporates in warmer temperatures, and warmer air can in turn hold more water creating the potential for heavier storms.
There are things the city can do to adapt to the changing climate. One way is capture and divert heavy rain through green infrastructure.
The basic idea is to use nature as a means both slowing, storing and treating this storm water, said Jordan Fischbach, co-director of the Rand Corporations Water and Climate Resilience Center.

Lol
Yeah, sure, right

What crap.
Pittsburgh is just a few inches shy of being a temperate rain forest in terms of annual rain fall. Mud slides happen here, always have always will...WESA is basically what you get when you let whackadoo college students run a station.
Very convenient. Any deviation from ideal weather is because of climate change, and results in government control of your behavior.
Sarah Boden again.
The NPR is strong in this one.
I’ve always told people, “You CAN’T get lost in Pittsburgh. You are either on a hill or on a bridge.”
There was a downpour in the late 70's and made our basement a mess. We just cleaned it up and went on.
Our little totalitarian Marxist thug is growing up so fast.
You mean discover how to build a Roman aqueduct, you blithering idiot?
NPR = Nothing but Propaganda Releases
THE WEATHER Means More Landslides In Pittsburgh's Future.
What these liars REALLY mean is
Man-Made Weather Means More Landslides In Pittsburgh's Future
Why post this utter bull sh#t from a known Lying Leftist outlet? What good does it do other than demoralize the readers? Some have said if they didnt know any better they would think FR was a Leftist site what with all the pro-Lying Left headlines streaming across.
LOLOL
So, dry places are getting drier, but Pittsburghs driest period was unseasonably wet?
The soil is very wet during the driest period?
But more water is evaporating due to warmer temperatures?
So the water is in the air, not the soil?
And this causes landslides?
I think I have whiplash.
I spent 30 years as an executive of a natural gas company in Pittsburgh. There have always been landslides. If anything there are less today because we are smarter in where we place our pipelines. Hey, lots of hills in the Burgh. Lots of hills means lots of landslides.
Any deviation from ideal weather is because of climate change,.......In PA, WTF is ideal weather? I hate this shithole state.
“Climate change” was going to lead to massive hurricanes hitting our country as well but unfortunately for the dooms dayers, we went 10 years without one.
And let's face it, Pittsburgh barely ekes above Philly as the shithole capitol of PA!
Pittsburgh is like many other Democrat-run cities who've burned through whatever public monies they have, paying off lucrative city and county pensions, they don't have enough money for actual infrastructure projects.
‘I hate this shithole state.’
I don’t hate it, but I sure am ready to go somewhere else...
I thought landslides are created by water in the soil combined with gravity. The smart people have apparently tagged climate change.
