State police issue safety warning after ‘chilling’ crash

After a crash that state police called chilling, the agency has issued a reminder about highway safety.

Shortly after midnight on Tuesday, state police Troop G in Bridgeport and West Haven fire units and emergency medical services responded to a crash on Interstate 95 northbound near exit 43 in West Haven.

The call reported a crash involving two tractor trailers. But when troopers arrived at the scene, they found a more serious crash and closed the highway.

The crash involved four tractor trailers and a Toyota Corolla.

“Troopers, firefighters and EMS immediately checked on the crash victims and, despite what you see in the photos, thankfully there were no fatalities,” state police said.

Two operators suffered serious injuries, but were still able to recount the crash to troopers.

We just had a crash here where the guy got out of his car after rear ending another car and got hit and killed by another car coming down the road....................

There used to be a toll both at that very spot on I-95. A tractor trailer slammed into cars waiting to pay the toll and a "grisly" conflagration ensued. Many deaths.

Between that, and the Mianus River bridge collapse in 1983 also on I-95, it was decided that the toll money collected did not outweigh the fact that if the tolls were removed the Feds took over 100% of the maintenance.

Corruption and mis-appropriation of toll revenues (wound up in the General Fund instead of road construction and maintenance) were brought to painful light and the tolls were finally removed in 1987.

A plan to revive a toll system through setting up an EZ-Pass mechanism was voted down just last week.

Jeez, it’s amazing that the Corolla driver survived. Wow.

Our newest car has auto braking and all the other safety features. I don’t know whether similar automatic braking and/or collision warning features are available in newer trucks or not but that could be helpful. I guess in tractor-trailer situations, it might only be marginally beneficial.

Work zone mayhem strikes again!

That happened to a friend of mine Christmas Day. Minor crash, got out and crushed by another car. Suffered traumatic brain injury and lives in a long term rehab hospital.

I lived in New Haven from 92-95 and drove to work in Norwalk on 95. The traffic both ways would slow to an absolute crawl after Bridgeport every day no matter how heavy the traffic flow. I asked a local who said it was because of the now nonexistent toll booth, even five years later. I had no idea that’s why it was removed though, yikes.
