Feds tapped Trump lawyer Michael Cohen's phones

Federal investigators have wiretapped the phone lines of Michael Cohen, the longtime personal lawyer for President Donald Trump who is under investigation for a payment he made to an adult film star who alleged she had an affair with Trump, according to two people with knowledge of the legal proceedings involving Cohen.

It is not clear how long the wiretap has been authorized, but NBC News has learned it was in place in the weeks leading up to the raids on Cohen's offices, hotel room, and home in early April, according to one person with direct knowledge.

At least one phone call between a phone line associated with Cohen and the White House was intercepted, the person said.

Previously, federal prosecutors in New York have said in court filings that they have conducted covert searches on multiple e-mail accounts maintained by Cohen.

Being in law enforcement and having some knowledge of what it takes to get “up on a wire”.....this stinks.

The layers of stuff you have to do to show you have exhausted all means of getting the info without a wiretap is THICK.

if all you are doing day and night is trying to find one thing a person did wrong, you will find it. Even if it’s something small. This is absurd. I hope Rudy destroys them all

I do believe Mueller has zeroed in on the Stormy-Trump-Cohen matter, and intends to prepare charges. What will be interesting is the timing of events. The alleged affair was in 2006. The payoff was in 2017. The reimbursement was in 2018?

The reason the "timing" is important is because Trump was a candidate when the payoff was made, and possibly a sitting president when the reimbursement was made.

He will attempt to file Obstruction charges, alleging Comey was fired because he (Comey) would have been investigating this matter rather than Mueller, had Trump not fired Comey.

All it takes is a charismatic leader to call for 4 million citizen militiamen to put a screeching halt to this BS, and withdraw consent to be governed by Washington.

All of this turmoil is related to the soon to be released OIG report. This is all about causing a distraction from what promises to be an explosive report criticizing the FBI.

“...which would make the continued Mueller antics moot.”

I think they’re already moot - the real problem is the deep state which remains even if Mueller shuts down his investigation tomorrow.

Ironically, the continuation of a witch hunt against Trump may actually be helping to turn the tide of public perception against the deep state.

As long as the elected POTUS is being openly bullied - the deep state is increasingly being seen as public enemy #1.

When Mueller is no longer persecuting Trump, who will be the “face” of the deep state? Will they then be back to flying below the radar, and out of public awareness?

Trump is attempting to brand the deep state as “the swamp” and raise public awareness that they do not want to MAGA. There has to be a “they” he can point to - it can’t be Democrats because people are tired of partisan bickering - it can’t be rich people because that’s a leftist ploy.

It has to be actual deep state players - I suspect he’ll keep Mueller around as long as possible to use as his deep state whipping boy. When that’s no longer possible, maybe Comey or McCabe or Brennen will be brought up on charges.

It’s better to have a real person as the boogie man - like Osama Bin Laden was for so long. Once you try to brand a group like Muslims or even terrorists, it’s not as effective. Republicans have completely lost their way now that they can’t point the finger at Obama.

Trump needs to find a suitable nemesis for when he’s done with Mueller. He might be setting up Rosenstien for that role, but I doubt it - Rosenstien is not high level enough.

What would be great would be to find out McCabe was an actual Russian spy the whole time - wouldn’t something like that put a nice chink in the armor of the deep state?

Charges on what basis? It is not illegal to pay off people who could cause a prominent person a public problem. Stormy signed off the NDA and was paid 130K re a personal issue. It happens all the time with celebrities. And remember the Congressional slush fund that was used to pay off people accusing Congressmen of sexual abuse.

This is all a major distraction as the OIG will be released within days.

You are absolutely correct. Bill Cunningham on his radio show said that for months (such as a process crime, a faulty loan or real estate signed document by Trump, etc.).

I wonder if what they really wanted to was secretly listen in on Trump’s legal strategy.( “They don’t know I’m going to have to back down if they....” “Don’t tell anyone this but....”) Trump was avoiding bugged areas left by Obama’s agents in the White House. The “leaks” everyone read in the NYT. Thought a phone was better. Hah.

I agree with you, but we’re dealing with a corrupt system. Even if it gets thrown out by a judge or grand jury, I think Mueller will bring charges and hope something sticks.

I agree except the SC is not the place for it as it is not an original court of jurisdiction except for the certain matters it is charged with by constitutional doctrine.

I don’t know where that blood sucker got off getting a wire tap on Cohen regarding violations of collusion with the Russians which is what he was charged to investigate. Was Cohen with the KGB, I doubt it. If he was investigating Cohen for some obscure property crime, that has ZERO do with with the blood suckers charge too. If it was a land mine to snare Trump, that is a violation of attorney client because there was absolutely no evidence beyond conjecture that there was a FEC violation.

I now see why this office was staffed with 100% hard core democrap operatives. Had there been one conservative GOP attorney, he would have blown the whistle on this fiasco last year, at the latest.

Isn't this the same arrogant ploy used to scam the FISA Court with the Steele memorandum?

Mueller obviously used some scurrilous detail from his plundering of Michael Cohen's private Trump files and convinced some Democrat judge to underwrite this quasi-legal wiretap.

The greatest irony in this whole stinking situation is the knowledge that President Trump's very own Department of Justice is taking salacious pleasure in nailing him to the cross.

Some serious push back is required--immediately and with great legal force.

So far the FBI and DOJ have not and did not hard pursue Obama and his minions. However, it wasn't for trying. There was talk of impeachment by certain members of congress, organizations such as Tom Fitton's were constantly poking around trying to find something to either do it themselves or force the DOJ/FBI to act.

So far while there may be missteps along the way, there hasn't really been any serious illegitimate political opposition.

When you seize material, how do you pick and choose or filter what is allowable to be used and what is atty client material. You gotta take all of it within reason.

How do you disclose a reluctant client? (For that matter, Cohen and his legal team claimed the third client would suffer embarrassment. Why would Hannity be embarrassed by being represented by Cohen? And was he really a client? To hear him say it, he was more a sounding board than a legal representative.)

What's the value of a wire tap unless it's to capture calls?
