America and the EMP threat
americanthinker.com ^ | 5/3/2018 | Daniel Ashman

A congressional committee report states that a large electromagnetic pulse (EMP) inundating America could cause 90% of Americans to die. The EMP is inevitable. The dead Americans are not.

Pry explained that an EMP can happen in a few different ways: if an adversary attacks America using nuclear weapons, or naturally via a large solar storm. The reason why a large EMP hitting Earth is inevitable is that solar storms are inevitable. They happen regularly. The only question is when a large one will cross Earth's path. For instance, NASA reported that if a solar superstorm from 2012 had happened just one week earlier, it would have blasted the Earth with a catastrophic EMP. We are playing this slot machine every day. Eventually, we're going to hit the jackpot.

What was the EMP strength? Was it 200,000V/m, or much less than that?

NO ONE has done the math? Well probably some one has, they just haven’t put it out for public consumption. ;-)

LOL! Even if it is not a threat, as some believe, doesn’t the “grid” need to be more secure form other nefarious happenings?

Yes, it does.

Our electrical grid is way too vulnerable.

A few years ago, Austin, TX and surrounding areas decided to cut people’s power for about half an hour in a round robin style during a freeze. They didn’t do it again. Lesson learned when they forgot to turn the power back on or couldn’t in some areas or when it was turned on transformers blew. They didn’t have many extra transformers so were scrambling to find some.

Do you really think Dr. Pry* has not considered math in his projections?

As it is not possible to know whether Dr(times 2) Pry reads posts on Free Republic, I suggest you send your calculations to him. I am serious. See what he says.

**Dr. Peter Pry on to his show to illuminate this issue. It’s not hard to see why Pry is considered America’s foremost expert on this topic. He has two Ph.D.s and a certificate on nuclear weapon design, worked at the CIA for a decade, worked on the House Armed Services Committee, and then served as director of the EMP Committee.

From what I know about the regulators in NYS, they can tell the electric utilities what to do and when. In return, they will be allowed to increase rates to a point where those costs are covered and still earn a pre determined profit. I would assume the situation is the same in most other states as well, but I don’t know.

Unless that role has changed over the years for some reason, the power company would be guaranteed a ROI. And, of course, being a monopoly the customers would have to pay up.

Therefore I don’t think a slow or non existent payback on taking precautionary measures is a consideration.

Slapping additional taxes and fees and surcharges to my utility bills never seemed a problem when the ‘cause’ was right.

You often cite this in your comments regarding EMP, can you please provide a link?

When the scares by jihadists began, our electric company took down the see through fencing and put up brick walls around the sub stations. Seems like that would help someone intent on doing something as they wouldn’t be seen by passersby.

This is just “boogie man” scare tactics.

A lot of power companies either have or are in the process of installing “enhanced grounding” on their infrastructure

I actually *did* the math for an EMP strike in post #56.

I saw that, thanks.     So few of us would have the will to survive...     I have horrified people by telling them that I would thrive in a global catastrophe. Ninety percent of the people I've known would immediately commit suicide at the first sign of a nuclear attack or a so called "extinction event."

Automobiles and telecommunications are about fifty on my list of priorities for the end of the world. My Dad's shotgun is near the top.

I’d suggest that before anyone spouts off again with such ingenious statements as “Ah, not this $hit again!” or “this is a big nothing” or similar UNINFORMED statements, that they read all four of the articles/studies linked to in this post. Once you’ve gotten informed, then come back to the rest of us with INFORMED doubts, rather than just ridicule (like the Alinskyites). Come on, folks, you’re better than that!

Agreed. I would like to add something about modern house wiring. I have stated this before. There is a large antenna in the walls of most modern homes. A Carrington like event will ruin many peoples day. There are ways to mitigate that effect. The National Electric Code should be changed to revise home construction and retrofit. For those that don't, best to keep some fire extinguishers around. The majority of the electric surge is not going to come from without the house, but within it.

I see your point. It would take years to recover and hopefully your gas would last that long.

It would be a horrendous situation. The worst part would be dealing with the political correct, unprepared idiots who have no common sense.

All I can remember from the book is the daughter died because there was no refrigeration for insulin and the dog was given to the neighbors to eat. In reality, the guy would have roasted the neighbors and he and the dog would have enjoyed a few meals.

Between EMP, Yellowstone, coronal mass ejections, meteors, heat stroke, hypothermia, zombies, flooding, plague, earthquakes and alien anihilatiion, man oh man...no wonder millenials are so unmotivated.

SPAM yes! And lots of Scotch, jerky, chocolate, oatmeal, rice, beans, salt, sugar, Tylenol, amoxillin, vitamins, water barrels and toilet paper. Maybe a nice red wine one, too. Oh yeah, and lotsa firepower. And a sewing kit. Yeah!
