I would say illegal immigration is destroying the reefs.

Just think, taxpayers are on the hook for lifetime pensions and benefits for the people who write these regulations.

Hawaii is set to become the first state to ban the sale of sunscreens containing chemicals believed to be harmful to the environment.

Get back to us when you KNOW something...

I think it’s spam. Spam is killing Hawaii’s reefs.

Wonder if it is based upon that “infamous secret science”?

oxybenzone or octinoxate, two chemicals that have been found to "cause genetic damage to coral and other marine organisms."

Is anyone here a marine biologist?

I’ve heard a theory floating around that the increase in instances of skin cancer may be related to the existence of sunscreen, where people who would normally avoid the sun (aka light-skinned people) spend much more time in the sun because they think the sunscreen protects them completely. Don’t know if this has ample evidence to back it up, but it makes sense.

Follow the money. The “alternative” sunscreens cost 6 to 10 times as much, per the article.

They’ll pass it.

And wind up repealing it or altering it in such a way as to make it moot after the tourism industry applies pressure.

Shouldn’t skin cancer be on the decline? People have been lathering up with that crap for decades, yet skin cancer rates are on the rise. Something doesn’t make sense.

The solution is simple. Just shut down Hawaii’s tourist trade. That will fix it.....

Just reinstate the coral draft.

environments, Octinoxate can reach more than 10 parts per billion. Along the west coast of Maui in 2015, Hawaii, 11 coral reefs sites that were sampled had octinoxate concentrations from 6.9 parts per trillion to 1,516 parts per trillion.

IMO it's tourists that are destroying those coral reefs.Let's see if the state bans out-of-staters from entering.

Liberal environmentalists are insane. Ocean currents sweep past Hawaii moving many cubic miles of water every day. The concentrations of sunscreen on the reefs would be magnitudes below minuscule. Perhaps they could be significant in a small bay with a small outlet. However, is the supposed contaminate been proven to be a contaminant? If they are a contaminant what level is needed to cause harm?
