Could sunscreen be destroying our coral reefs? Hawaii lawmakers say yes

Hawaii is set to become the first state to ban the sale of sunscreens containing chemicals believed to be harmful to the environment. State lawmakers passed a bill Tuesday that prohibits the sale and distribution of over-the-counter sunscreens containing oxybenzone or octinoxate, two chemicals that have been found to "cause genetic damage to coral and other marine organisms."

"These chemicals have also been shown to degrade corals' resiliency and ability to adjust to climate change factors and inhibit recruitment of new corals," the bill reads.

The contamination is "constantly refreshed and renewed everyday" by swimmers and beachgoers, according to the bill. A 2015 scientific paper reports up to 14,000 tons of sunscreen gets released into coral reefs each year.

I would say illegal immigration is destroying the reefs.

Just think, taxpayers are on the hook for lifetime pensions and benefits for the people who write these regulations.

I think it’s spam. Spam is killing Hawaii’s reefs.

Wonder if it is based upon that “infamous secret science”?

Is anyone here a marine biologist?

I’ve heard a theory floating around that the increase in instances of skin cancer may be related to the existence of sunscreen, where people who would normally avoid the sun (aka light-skinned people) spend much more time in the sun because they think the sunscreen protects them completely. Don’t know if this has ample evidence to back it up, but it makes sense.

I thought it was all the whales and dolphins peeing in the oceans near the reefs.

Follow the money. The “alternative” sunscreens cost 6 to 10 times as much, per the article.

They’ll pass it.

And wind up repealing it or altering it in such a way as to make it moot after the tourism industry applies pressure.

Shouldn’t skin cancer be on the decline? People have been lathering up with that crap for decades, yet skin cancer rates are on the rise. Something doesn’t make sense.

The solution is simple. Just shut down Hawaii’s tourist trade. That will fix it.....

There will also be a huge black market for sunscreen, plus everyone will be buying it on the internet from Amazon and other sources.

I understand this is all based on ONE study which has been criticized as not having proper controls. But now that it’s been put out there as harmful, under the Precautionary Principle you have to prove it couldn’t happen. You can’t prove a negative.

It’s basically the same problem as everything being known to the State of California to cause cancer. If a rat could get cancer from drinking 200 cups of coffee a day, then you have to prove humans won’t get cancer from drinking one cup a day.

I have never been a fan of “sunscreen” as a product and don’t use it. If I need sun protection, it is called sleeves, or a hat.
