PITTSBURGH - The statue of composer Stephen Foster that stood in Schenley Plaza in Pittsburghs Oakland neighborhood since 1940 was removed Thursday morning.
Controversial for its portrayal of Foster, a Lawrenceville native, with an African American man seated below him, the bronze statue has been scrutinized as racist for years.
Future of Pittsburgh's Stephen Foster statue in question Pittsburghs Art Commission decided with a unanimous vote on Oct. 25 that the 10x4 foot statue, which sits on a granite base, would come down within six months. Under city code, the Art Commission is responsible for overseeing the alteration, relocation or removal of all city-owned art.
Crews used a backhoe to remove the statue from its base. It was then loaded onto a flatbed truck and hauled away.

Before being placed in Schenley Plaza, the statue by sculptor Giuseppe Moretti was unveiled in Highland Park in 1900. Moretti also created the panthers on Schenley Parks Panther Hollow Bridge and the sculptures at the entrance to Highland Park.
The Schenley Plaza site that has been home to the Foster statue will not stay bare. Mayor Bill Pedutos office has been seeking public input in the selection of an African American woman to be honored with a statue.

Of course a list of black females who made minimal contributions are being considered for a statue to replace him.
Maybe Churchill Downs will buy it. They changed the words to “My Old Kentucky Home” decades ago.
Pittsburgh is named after William Pitt, who was an ardent advocate of British imperialism. I guess the city should be re-named too.
Has anyone made a Motion or Attempted to Completely OUTLAW the Democrat Party for it’s Historical Ties to Racism?? WHY NOT?
I’d like to see that list. I can’t imagine off-hand whom they would choose.
LIB lunatics and their PC lunacy. What malignancies on civil society . These dolts despise history and reality.
I read a post this morning that really hit hard. “Shoulda picked our own cotton”
Leftists are acting as if they’re in pre-literacy days with statues and symbols serving as a substitute for books and writing.
to bad Oprah, Beyonce, Joy Reid, April Ryan, Woopie are not from Pittsburgh bu they are the Pitts.
Very good question.
Just read that Lena Horne lived in Pittsburgh for a short period of time; that might be enough for her to qualify.
Most if those pushing these events, still are in pre literacy days as witnessed by their speech patterns.
Oh,brother! Will these troublemakers ever stop? No, not until Americans stiffen their spines and tell them “NO!” One of America’s greatest song writers under attack. The Left is out to destroy what is left of our culture and replace it with a screaming, rapping, monotonous one note drum thumping, obscenity shrieking culture of no value at all.
Anyone who thought it was going to stop with Confederate statues is a grade-A fool. If you supported the left with that, you don’t get to complain now. Next is “offensive to Native Americans” statues (Andrew Jackson), Texas Revolution figures (Sam Houston) and then eventually any Founding Father that ever owned slaves.
It’s at the bottom of the story. Madame CJ Walker is the only one I’ve ever heard of, and only because she from Indiana. But then I guess qualifications is never really the point when choosing a Black woman to replace a white man is it?
I loved this statue as a kid and we lived in the Pgh. ‘burbs.
Disgusted by all of this nonsense, THIS one is more of a personal hurt.
Any time is long enough. Replacing a song writer with a singer makes sense. I still think Stephen Foster deserves better than this disgraceful act.
“scrutinized as?”
Who the heck wrote this? Scrutinized means to examine closely, not adjudge or conclude or even opine.
I hate to say we told you so, but we told you so. The indifference and in some cases, the outright cheering on of folks when the movement to destroy Southern History and Monuments began only emboldened these groups. We said then, that it would only be a matter of time, before they came for other monuments. One only has to look to South Carolina, the flag was moved from the statehouse because it “belonged in a museum”, now of course, there is a movement to remove it from the Museum. The Battle Flags that adorned Robert E. Lee’s crypt at Washington and Lee College, gone. The Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond, renamed. Appeasement has failed, again.
They’re already trying to take Jackson down in Jackson Square in New Orleans.
