Sessions Declines to Recuse Himself From Probe Into Trump Lawyer

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has decided against recusing himself from the investigation into President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, but will consider stepping back from specific questions tied to the probe, according to a person familiar with the matter.

By contrast, Sessions recused himself from the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election that’s now led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, a decision that angered Trump and left Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein in charge of the inquiry.

Sessions, who was a top adviser to Trump’s presidential campaign, announced in March 2017 that he had decided he should steer clear of “any matters arising from the campaigns” for president. Trump has called Sessions weak for doing so and said he never would have named him as attorney general had he known the recusal would follow. Entitled to Briefings

By staying involved in the Cohen probe, Sessions is entitled to briefings on the status of the investigation, which is being conducted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Southern District of New York. That could put Sessions in the position of being asked by Trump, who strongly condemned the FBI raid on his longtime lawyer, to divulge information about the Cohen investigation.

Sessions could also weigh in on specific decisions by prosecutors, including whether to pursue subpoenas and indictments. The attorney general may be asked about his role in the Cohen investigation when he testifies before congressional panels on Wednesday and Thursday.

The investigation into Cohen’s finances and past work was opened based in part on a referral from Mueller.

The Justice Department declined to comment specifically about decisions on recusal in the Cohen investigation, saying only that Sessions follows appropriate procedures.

Leaves you wondering just why he remains in office, since it’s clear he has no intention of doing his job.

“For the last ten years....both Sessions and Shelby of Alabama...were fake GOP senators.”

Agreed! And it seems that this situation prevails in that “Southern Tier” of states. That is MS, AL, and LA, where you have aging, intrenched Republicans that the GOPE “protects.” Yeah, they all have R’s after their names, but they do little or nothing to prosecute the Trump Agenda, and when they are “forced out into the open,” you get a “spineless leader” as is the case with Sessions. I guess, in a way, smoking out Sessions will end up being a good thing, because as soon as conditions will allow, Trump will cut him loose and he won’t be back in the Senate sleeping through his duties. Just wish these states could manage to elect some young blood, instead of going for “wierdos” like Roy Moore. Carrying a Bible doesn’t automatically make you an effective leader.

You don’t know what you are talking about. David Vitter was Louisiana’s first Republican senator, elected in 2005. Then Cassidy was elected a few years ago, and John Kennedy last time, for a grand total of three Republican senators. Hardly entrenched GOPe control, as is most states with GOP senators.

It is strange that you think an abortion promoter, a gay marriage proponent, an anti-American senator is not weird, as Moore’s opponent is.

WTH does this guy actually do? Arguably one of the most important cabinet positons is held by a part time, semi-retired bureaucrat who lives in a bubble.

“5I tell ya Ronnie, some days I just wonder what I’m going to wake up to in this country.

Nothing has been right since 2008.”

9/11 sure as hell didn’t do it. I don’t think Pearl Harbor would do it. A couple of nuked cities might do it for a few weeks. But then depending on the cities....

Alabama had a chance to get rid of the GOPE’s “choice,” Luther Strange and elect a decent man to be their next Senator, Mo Brooks. Instead they allowed themselves to get caught up in the “ongoing saga” of Roy Moore, coupled with the GOPE’s money going to Strange and managed to get Doug Jones for their trouble. In MS, the GOPE drove out Mc Daniel to keep Thud Cochran around until his Depends filled up. In AL the other Senator is an 83 year-old curmudgeon, Richard Shelby, will probably be replaced in 2020 by a GOPE anointed candidate. As for LA, my bet is that both the Senators there are GOPE “placements” as well. Stepping over to the House, you have Steve Scalice, who is now looking to be Speaker. Also a big GOPE type. If we get either him or McCarthy, it will be as though Ryan never left.

Both support Trump and vote for his initiatives.

Scalise has always been conservative.

“ongoing saga” of Roy Moore...”

According to you, anyone who fights for the Constitution has a “saga” going? Was Moore GOPe?

Sessions Declines to Recuse Himself From Probe Into Trump Lawyer

Beginning to think that Sessions was a pinko party mole from the start. Has fought everything the public wants since day one.

“Was Moore GOPe?”

Definitely not, just a guy who is a point off the curve! There IS something strange about a man who marries a woman who is 14 years younger than he is.

“Moore first saw his future wife, Kayla Kisor, when she was in her mid teenage years, performing at a dance recital. In his 2005 autobiography, Moore described his reaction, writing: “I knew Kayla was going to be a special person in my life.” Years later, Moore and Kisor met again at a Christmas party. She was then a divorced mother. They married a year later in 1985 when Moore was 38 and Kisor was 24.”

You are kidding, right?

Donald Trump is 23 years older than Melania.

The average single man would jump at the chance to marry a woman 14 years younger.

All the Hollywood stars Americans love and adore usually marry women much younger than just 14 years.

I don’t think so. What? Correta Scott King accused him of being a racist prosecutor years before just to give him a cover story when he became Trump’s AG? He’s got a long record, and none of it RINO. Right now he’s on everybody’s sh!t list because he recused himself. I think that’ll change in time. It’s a bad idea to look at history in reverse.
