Paris (AFP) - California will zigzag between droughts and floods which will become more intense and more frequent in the coming decades unless global emissions of planet-warming greenhouse gases are checked, researchers said Monday.
The Golden State has already experienced a rapid rise in such "whiplash" events -- careering from a record multi-year drought between 2012 and 2016, to heavy flooding in the winter of 2016-17.
The situation will worsen as the global climate alters due to mankind's voracious burning of coal, oil, and gas for energy, a team wrote in the journal Nature Climate Change.
They projected that wet-to-dry extremes in California may double under a worst-case scenario in which fossil fuel emissions continue growing until 2100 instead of the urgent reduction scientists say our planet needs.
Such unfettered emissions would lead to average global warming far exceeding the ceiling of two degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) set out in the Paris Agreement concluded by the world's nations in 2015.
A recent analysis said national pledges made under the pact slow emissions, but still put the world on track for warming of 3C or more -- dangerous, but lower than the outlier scenario used for the study.
Based on their models, the researchers projected a 25-percent rise in the frequency of so-called whiplash events for northern California this century, and up to 100 percent in the south of the state.
A disaster on the scale of the 1862 "Great Flood" was likely to occur at least once between now and 2060 and would "probably lead to considerable loss of life and economic damages approaching a trillion dollars," said the study.
Multiple such events were "plausible" until 2100.

Wow, that’s totally unlike the climate of California that I remember!
Wait, what? I thought the last study said climate change would cause permanent drought in CA, and wasn’t that just 2 years ago? Maybe “they” really don’t know what’s going to happen and maybe it’s just called “the weather”.
Another day another lying “team” of hacks.
Let’s hear from a fourth generation native Californian:
“HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! bullshit!”
How about whiplash from incompetent, limousine Communist politicians and their supporters in Hollyweird and Silicon Valley?
OK!! Everybody pay attention!
Lesson for today:
1. The sun is 1,300,000 times as big as the earth.
2. The sun is a giant nuclear furnace that controls the climates of all its planets.
3. The earth is one of the suns planets.
4. The earth is a speck in comparison to the size of the sun.
5. Inhabitants of the earth are less than specks.
Study Question: How do less-than-specks in congress plan to control the sun?
They have been bitching about floods and droughts in California since 1849. That is just the way it goes out there. And every single year is the worst ever.
God, the Creator and Preserver of this planet, is in charge of the weather. Man can bring about climate changes by immoral behavior, as in the Great Flood of Genesis or the seven year drought in the days of Elijah recorded in the Bible. We never hear of that man-caused “climate change.”
More CO2 emissions lead to more plant growth. Plants soak up solar energy. Climate cools as a result.
I totally remember CA as being in either drought or flood situation. It seems that moderate weather mostly did not exist, for many decades.
Someone had to post it.
And this pic says it all.
Seems all of these drought plagued areas were at one time, fertile. Seems someone shut the water off to these fertile areas to save a smelt.
Unintended consequences that can no longer be covered up. Eight of the top 10 cities with air pollution come from California. This isn’t global (fill in the blank).
Like all good liberals, politicians in California are trying to blame others for their bad management decisions. Every policy they promote is intended to hurt the working man and transfer the wealth either to themselves or some cause that also doesn’t work.
Solution for California is difficult, but I think starting by deporting illegals is a good start.
If they would build a few dams to control the water in floods and save it for drought situations it would help. That would amount to a common sense idea though which is at a severe drought level there.
‘Study Question: How do less-than-specks in congress plan to control the sun?’
With common-sense sun control laws, of course.
1. No mooning the sun
2. Negotiations to convince the sun to use its giant nuclear fusion reactor for the peaceful production of electricity and plant life
3. Normalization of solar-terran relations; we should have an embassy up there soon
4. One-world government to carry on said negotiations with an united front
5. Worship of the sun and sacrificing sluts to it. Stormi? Has anyone seen Stormi?
6. Dying Donald’s hair black, so as not to offend the holy, blessed Sun with a color so similar to hers.
7. Persuading him to do the right thing and sacrifice himself to the holy, blessed Sun
8. Equally distributing the bounty of the holy, blessed Sun to each according to his needs, and collectivizing all agriculture.
9. Killing all non-believers, in the name of the holy, blessed Sun.
10. An end to all greenhouse gasses. If you want to go somewhere fast, wind wagons and bicycles.
10.
much of california is desert that is subject to damage when a front with rain passes through.
people mindlessly buy property subject to damage by intense rain.
The destruction of California by natural means is merely reversion to the mean
Global Warming could lead to a phenomena called “The Santa Ana Winds” which have not occurred since the Ice Age.
It’s in the geologic and tree-ring record. California has waxed and waned between wetter and dryer for thousands of years. It’s it’s place in global geography, receiving more directly and immediately than other areas the dynamic shifting of air and water currents from the Pacific Ocean basin. (Keep in mind the earth’s rotation, which makes currents generally more west to east than east to west). California does not have a giant mid-continental ridge sitting between it and the Pacific, breaking up and altering currents coming its way - as does the Mid West U.S.
