A Toronto police officer who refused to shoot the man suspected of plowing a van into crowds of pedestrians on Monday, killing 10 people, was praised for restraint in the face of a suspect who claimed to have a gun.
Video footage showed the police officer staring down the suspect at gunpoint in the middle of a street, while the man pointed what appeared to be a gun and shouted "Kill me." The video showed the suspect repeatedly pulling an object from his side and aiming at police.
The arrest was praised as a welcome example of police restraint in the midst of chaos, coming just minutes after a white rental van plowed into a lunchtime crowd in north Toronto, killing 10 people and injuring 15.
As the suspect shouted "Kill me," the officer replied, "No, get down." When the suspect said, "I have a gun in my pocket," the officer responded: "I don't care. Get down."
"It's quite apparent that the suspect was trying to be executed. He was really looking for 'suicide-by-cop,'" Gary Clement, retired Royal Canadian Mounted Police superintendent with 34 years experience of policing.
The Toronto Police Service declined to name the officer involved in the stand-off, but Clement said he appeared to be a "very seasoned and mature officer."
Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders said, "They are taught to use as little force as possible in any given situation," he said.
The non-violent end to the standoff won plaudits on social media.
"Wow, at how these Canadian cops brought in this suspected killer," said Twitter user Stuart A. Thompson.
Police in the United States have been criticized for being too quick to pull the trigger after a series of high-profile police shootings and deaths of suspects during arrest.

I could do with an “agenda” of fewer tales of summary execution followed by the rehearsed “I thought he had a gun” and an official PD shrug of the shoulders.
The old days were, keep him healthy so we can hang him from a rope as an example.
Then they stopped the death penalty.
Then they made prisons softer
Then they shortened prison sentences.
So police went back to being the executioners.
Yep. Can’t stop bashing cops despite apples and oranges situation.
“However, there was a time in this country our police would have tried to talk the man down, or get him to drop the weapon before shooting.”
This guy never posed a threat or perceived threat to the police.
How soon will the murderous perp be back on the streets, walking or driving, unlike his deceased victims?
>>”Wow, at how these Canadian cops brought in this suspected killer,” said Twitter user Stuart A. Thompson.
Suspected killer, what BullStalin.
He was a rampage killer and first response should be to NEUTRALIZE that threat. Permanently.
>>This guy never posed a threat or perceived threat to the police.
Said he had a gun, said “kill me”. Had just attempted to kill over a dozen people and was successful in at least part of that number.
Now the killer will cost the citizens of Toronto millions to prosecute and support him for the rest of his miserable life. A $1 bullet would have done the trick.
The police officer is fortunate the murderer wasn’t armed. The officer could just as easily been the next victim.
The poice officer did not fire because he knew his life was not in danger, and he wanted to obtaion further evidence on any possible conspiracy.
The perpNotice how the focus mof this article is on the policeman and not on the perpetrator, Alex Minassian is a 25 year old student of Senaca college located in North York, Toronto .Minassian is an Armenian, Turkish or Iranian surname and this is likely a hate crime perpetrated by a radical Muslim. Ordinary Canadians are enraged by the lack luster crap statements from our federal and local leadership.
Unfortunately Canada does not have a death penalty. Its criminal law is also uniform nationally, under the Criminal Code of Canada.Maybe we will get lucky and someone will eventually shoot this POS if his gulit is proven.
He pointed his finger like a gun at the cops.
Thought it was one of them new flesh colored Glocks captain
“suspected” ???

Can’t interrogate the dead.....the cop did good by not shooting an unarmed (at the time) man who was trying to be martyred...
>>The lefties have their agendas.<<
No matter HOW many people they kill. Dead people are but collateral damage in the face of the Greater Good.
