A Fresno State professor who called the late Barbara Bush “racist” soon after her death Tuesday, and said she was glad “the witch is dead,” continues to face fallout as donors mull ceasing donations to the institution.
Randa Jarrar, an English professor at the school (also known as California State University at Fresno), sparked outrage Tuesday just hours after the former first lady died at age 92, writing a number of tweets attacking Bush and the family.
“Barbara Bush was a generous and smart and amazing racist who, along with her husband, raised a war criminal. F*** outta here with your nice words,” the professor tweeted. “I’m happy the witch is dead. Can’t wait for the rest of her family to fall to their demise the way 1.5 million Iraqis have.”
Jarrar, a tenured professor, boasted on social media that because she has tenure, she won’t be fired from her job. She’s currently on leave this semester and was reportedly traveling overseas.

Free speech? Where do these groups stand on so-called “hate speech”? Speech codes? “Safe zones”?
Tenure should be done away with IMO but if it is going to exist, the purpose is to allow profs to express different points of view when teaching their academic subjects....different scientific theories, different historical interpretations, etc. It was not meant to be a complete free pass for profs to just spew bile and bring opprobrium to their employer. That should always be considered to be outside the scope of the protections afforded by tenure.

Perhaps the only positive thing to come from instances such as this is that it identifies that particular university as one lacking academic standards of any kind because the so-called “professor” has the intellect of a rock. And, should she not be fired (and she won’t) the administration is outed as liberal, spineless and corrupt. (But I repeat myself.
You can lose tenure...although it’s awful hard. What they might do is hustle up some mental eval, and suggest that she’s suffering a breakdown, and she just walks out the backdoor with a limited pay-out deal. I have my doubts that she’ll be a full-time lecture person come the fall.
