(Reuters) - U.S. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein told President Donald Trump last week that he is not a target of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation, according to a source familiar with the probe.
After the April 12 conversation with Rosenstein, Trump told advisers that he was not inclined to seek the ouster of either man since he is not the target of Mueller’s probe.
The conversation was first reported by Bloomberg.
The Justice Department told Reuters it does not comment on conversations with the president. The White House did not respond to a request for comment.
Mueller is investigating allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.
Russia has denied meddling in the election. Trump has said there was no collusion and has repeatedly called the Mueller probe a “witch hunt,” raising concerns he might try to fire the special counsel or Rosenstein, who oversees the investigation.
Under Justice Department policy, a target is someone who is believed to have committed a crime and is likely to face charges, while a subject is someone whose conduct is within the scope of an investigation, said Lisa Kern Griffin, a former federal prosecutor and a professor at Duke University School of Law.
The Washington Post reported earlier this month that Trump is a subject of the probe.

I don’t believe this. For Trump to say he doesn’t want to fire them because he’s not a target implies that he would fire them if he was. If it’s true he’s not a target then now would be the perfect time to fire them.

Why then did he sign the search warrant for Cohen’s office and home raid? Everything they scooped from his home and office by the SDNY which is the massively corrupt district in New York will find something to incriminate Trump! This fight is not even close to being over! That’s the plan.
The DOJ has published regulations which divide people they want to talk to into three categories: targets, subjects and witnesses. A target is someone they have already decided to indict; a witness is someone they believe did nothing wrong, but whom they believe has information relevant to their investigation; and a subject is someone whom they haven't decided yet whether they're a target or a witness. They told President Trump that he's not a target but is a subject. That does not mean the President has nothing to worry about from Mueller. Quite the contrary, actually, because subjects have fewer rights than targets, but can become targets on a moment's notice.
Mueller didn't. He said that he found evidence against Cohen that didn't relate to his investigation, so he referred it to the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. They got the warrant.
There is speculation that Mueller's referral to the SDNY involved Cohen's payoffs to Stormy Daniels, but I suspect it is nothing of the kind-- probably some fraud relating to Cohen's taxi business.
