Out-of-control Sydney bush fire spreads towards nuclear reactor and army ammunition warehouse...
Daily Mail (Australia) ^ | 15th April 2018 | Hannah Moore

An out-of-control bushfire blazing through south-west Sydney could hit the nuclear reactor at Lucas Heights, and spot fires have broken out at the Holsworthy military barracks.

The bushfire, which jumped Heathcote Road and has already burnt through 980 hectares of land, is still out of control and being spread by strong winds.

Greg Allan, a spokesman for NSW Rural Fire Service, told Daily Mail Australia suburbs in the north-east of the fire were their current concern, with residents in Pleasure Point, Sandy Point, Illawong, Menai and Bangor expected to be hit by an ember attack.

'We are advising residents in those suburbs to shelter in place, as it is now too late to leave,' he said.

Could do with some prayers down here.

(I am nowhere near it and safe - but it's not a good situation for those who are nearby)

I seriously doubt the nuclear reactor is in danger from a brush fire.

Whole towns have been destroyed by fires like this in the past.

They are not little things. They are pretty much the worst natural disaster Australia faces on a regular basis.

The good news is the time of year - they are most dangerous in high summer.

But this is not just a little brush fire.

I thought brush fires only occurred during the summer,as is the case with fires in the American West.

Much more common in Summer, but frankly, the way our weather has been recently, it still is summer...

In retrospect, it was probably a bad idea to build the cooling towers out of bamboo.

The problem in these cases is the switch yard. If the switch yard is impacted by the fire the plant will become isolated from grid power. they will have to SCRAM or shut down the reactor and go to back up power sources to maintain pump operations.

Prayers up. Something of note: I found it to be VERY difficult to pray about this. I wanted to; and it took a LOT of effort.

Dear Heavenly Father: Please, Your Will Be Done Here.
Holy Spirit. Please send the words for this prayer, which is so difficult to pray, in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

We pray that You use this terrible, frightening, and potentially deadly situation to drive many, many persons to you, and back to You. Save them, Lord. You said in Your word that whosoever calls upon the Name of Jesus, will be saved. Let them call, and let them come. Let the lost pray to You regarding this fire, and answer their prayers. Show Yourself mighty to save, both from the first death, and from the second. Use this fire for Your will. In the Name above all Names of our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.

Thank you.

Dear God, please send a host of heavenly angelic protection around the critical resources such as the aforenamed switchpoints, cooling towers, electrical grid, and water sources, and fuel and ammo depots. And the reactor. Keep persons of evil intent from critical points and also fulfilling their wicked purposes.

Well, I thank you very much for taking the effort. It is appreciated, even though that is, of course, not the reason you did it.

"the plant will become isolated from the grid"

Exactly! This is one of the worst case scenarios for a nuclear power plant. In most of these plants there is a single steam pipe, a couple of feet in diameter, that carries roughly a HUNDRED MILLION horsepower of steam power. That energy has to go somewhere. If it can't make electricity, it makes heat.....lots of heat. If the plant loses the grid, back up generators the size of two locomotives must start within 30 seconds to provide pumps to move the heat away, and shut down the reactor. If not, you have a core meltdown.

The Chernobyl disaster was started by a hare brained idea from the operators that they could shut down the reactor without using back up generators, by using the power from its own nuclear powered generators. The plant ran out of electricity, before it ran out of heat, and viola! - meltdown. Modern reactors don't have the fires that caused all of the Chernobyl aftermath, but they still can have the core meltdown.

Not quite as dire as that, but you are on the right track. As long as they don’t lose the ability to operate valving as they did at Fukushima there are further resources to bring to bear to maintain control over the plant.

When you have to try and connect your Sears portable compressor and run it from an inverter using the car batteries you scavenged from your co-workers cars in the parking lot to operate the plant’s valves, at that point I think you are well and truly screwed. ( Fukushima )
