Activists deface Jefferson statue at UVA with the words 'racist' and 'rapist'

A statue to Thomas Jefferson on the lawn of the University of Virginia was defaced with the words 'racist' and 'rapist' early on Friday morning, just before the start of celebrations marking the 275th anniversary of his birth.

A UVA spokesman said: 'The university is disappointed that individuals vandalized the statue of Thomas Jefferson on the Lawn on the day that we honor his contributions to our University and to our democracy.

'UVA welcomes open and civil discourse on such important issues. However, acts of vandalism do not contribute to meaningful discussion.

'Crews from Facilities Management are removing the vandalism, and the University Police Department is investigating the incident.'

  Post your favorite quote and why it is your favorite. April 13 is Thomas Jefferson's 275th Birthday. Since I share his birthday, I have long been a fan. But that is mainly because the drafter of the Declaration of Independence was the most prolific of our founders, especially on the topics of liberty and the rights that America was created to preserve and protect. It is worth celebrating his bicenterquasiquigenary (according to the only website I found providing a latin name) by remembering his profound words.

Truth is Jefferson hated the enslavement of people. When he wrote his first draft of the Declaration of Independence he wrote about how awful it was. The last draft did not use the word slavery, but did speak of the equality of all men, which also intended to mean black people. The reason for the change was because they needed to have all the southern states on board with the Declaration and the word change satisfied them to the point that the Declaration passed.

Stephen Ambrose, the eminent historian was asked by Brian Lamb on C-SPAN about Thomas Jefferson fathering Sally Hemmings children and Ambrose said that it was more likely Jefferson's brother and that Jefferson was not the type of person who would speak up and say that his brother did it. He believed that history would eventually judge him correctly.

We have to remember that slavery in those days was very much like abortion is today. It was ingrained in the land and any attempt to overhaul it was met with stiff opposition.

Thomas Jefferson did not have a child by Sally Hemmings. It was most likely his brother Randolph as she mentioned him in her writings.
