A Russian warplane this weekend flew over a French warship at low altitude in the eastern Mediterranean, a deliberate breach of international regulations, a French naval source said on Tuesday.
The weekly magazine Le Point said the Russian plane had flown over frigate Aquitaine over the weekend and was fully-armed.
It also added that the Aquitaine could be used in strikes against the Assad regime.
The incident comes as tensions mount between Russia and Western nations following a suspected chemical weapons attack in Syria on April 7. At least 60 people were killed in the attack, according to a Syrian relief agency.
France, the United States and their allies are considering a coordinated military response after accusing the Russia-backed Syrian government of being behind the attack. Damascus and Moscow have denied a chemical attack took place.
The Aquitaine is equipped with 16 cruise missiles and 16 surface-to-air missiles. It is currently operating off Lebanese shores alongside U.S. ships as part of France's contingent fighting Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq.
'The flight took place several days ago,' a French naval source said, adding that France had contacted Russian authorities over the matter.
'Passes by military aircraft over warships are things that happen at sea. When it is deemed too close, the opposing party is notified,' the source said.
The Russian air force has already carried out such 'aggressive' flights over Western warships in the past.

It’s an epic failure of the defense establishment, that very soon not a single American child will have known a day when America was at peace, in their entire lives... with not a single battle actually fought on US territory.
WTF are these guys there for if not to protect the desire of Americans to live in peace and prosperity?
“Whoa, Bob! Think it through....
Russia sinking a NATO ship would CAUSE a full-out, potentially nuclear war. If you love your children, you dont want it to go there.”
The question for me is just how hard will Russia hit back after we directly attack them.
Some people here are convinced that their military is no better than Iraq’s was in 1990 - looks good on paper, but nothing works. They base that on the Russians not testing a nuclear bomb for 30 years, having some of their nuke scientists leave for better paying jobs (in other countries), and the Russians not having fielded any new bombers since the 1990s.
They also base it on the fact that Russia chose not to retaliate after we are told we killed 200 of their mercenaries, according to the Deep State (i.e. CIA). Therefore since they didn’t care that we killed some mercenaries, they won’t care if we start directly bombing their military.
I prefer to think that some of their nukes just may still work, and I’d rather not have to find out which ones - same for their bombers and other hardware. Similarly, there’s just an outside chance that Russia may not be happy if we bomb their front-line troops, even though they didn’t respond after what we (supposedly) did to their mercenaries.
My point is that if Russia wants to minimize escalation after being attacked for defending an ally, I am HOPING that they do their best to limit their response, and taking out a French ship would be far more limited than, for example, taking out one of our carrier groups, or testing our 2000 or so troops who are somehow supposed to defend the Baltics from Russian ground forces.
Unlike the Neocons here, I prefer that we CALL IT A DAY and let Assad keep Syria - rather than try to put our military, which hasn’t exactly been on a spending spree themselves for the past 25 years, up against theirs - which has been on a spending spree for the past 15 years.
So lets root for the Russians to kill the French? Your comment is sickening.
“So lets root for the Russians to kill the French? Your comment is sickening.”
If that’s what it takes to prevent exchanging nukes with Russia, then yes.
But if you actually READ my posting, you’ll see that I prefer not prodding the Russians in the first place.
Killing the French is wrong?
I guess you forgot about Vietnam.
Which Soviet bases did we bomb during Vietnam?
Qaddafi was going to massacre his own people, he was a kind of animal
Not another mind-reader on this thread, PLEASE.
granada is right. Qaddhafi ordered his army to shoot Libyan civilians. About 75% of the army refused, desserted and linked up with provincial militias. Qaddhafi then ordered his southern mercenary army to carry out the killings. The mercenaries shot up a bunch of kids at a college, outraging the Libyan people.
The provincial militias organized and attacked Qaddhafi’s mercenaries.
A week earlier the men Libyan loyalists of the dictator and black African recruits had been landed at airports throughout eastern Libya and sent out into the streets to shoot protesters in a murderous rampage. They killed dozens before they were overwhelmed by anti-Gaddafi militias.

...and who instigated the violent ‘protests’? Why Hillary/Obama, of course.
So what was Qaddafi supposed to do at that point, sit back and enjoy watching his government be overthrown?
What I want to see is something from BEFORE our involvement, showing that Qaddafi planned to murder his people for sport, as you implied.
You’re quite a piece of work.
You ask for proof, are given proof and you laugh it off.
I asked for proof that he planned to murder his people BEFORE we got involved with trying to overthrow him, and I’m still waiting for that.

Agreed without reservation.
Even Reagan knew to get the Hell out after the Beirut Embassy bombing.
Not to the French (who also have nukes), and OBTW, hope is not a strategy.
Don’t put words in my mouth. I never said we bombed Russki bases in Vietnam. We are not going to hit any “Russian base” in Syria, either. Has even the most ardent hawk in the Trump Admin. said anything like that?
However, there were plenty of Russians involved in Vietnam at various times & places, and we did kill some. Unlike this instance, we surely gave no warning. Russians, esp. behind the controls at AA sites, killed a number of our people, too. We have no need to send in aircraft in this instance.
Putin is a pragmatist, and we are giving him lots of time to consider his actions. There is NO upside for him to do anything immediate other than try to intercept some of our missiles. If he does, we can learn from that (technical details) and discredit him publicly as a defender of a user of chem weapons.
OTOH, from the 1st I have said (check my posts) that we need to be sure who’s responsible for the chem attack. And if we have proof Assad still has chemical weapons, we need to confront, or at least seriously embarrass / discredit the Russkis about that.
It is unfortunately unlikely, but it *would* be far better to see the Russians laughed out of the ME than fight them (even in surrogate wars.)
Anybody who wets their diaper(s?) about our potentially slapping Assad for using chem weapons leading to WW3, and then claims that Russia taking out a French warship would REDUCE the chances of escalation, is clearly beyond logic or reason.
Well as its looking it could be Us and Isreal versus everyone else
You haven’t lived until you’ve been “buzzed” by a TU-95 on a small boy. Saw it on a FF in 1087. Engine room rang up the bridge to find out what was making all the racket.
“Sorry, I have children and I want to see them grow up in something other than a nuclear wasteland.”
Then don’t vote for Goldwater.
