When the U.S. takes military action against Syrian President Bashar Assad for his chemical weapons attack last Saturday, Russia is unlikely to retaliate.
Two factors underline why.
First off, the Russians do not want to associate themselves with what Assad has done.
Putin doesn't like the public relations aftermath he is now suffering.
In turn, while Putin is employing his standard distraction-deception-threat strategy in an attempt to shield Assad from blame, his eye is on other agendas. Notably, avoiding new sanctions targeting Moscow and ensuring that the upcoming soccer World Cup which Putin sees as critical to attract much-needed foreign investment are accomplished.
This calculation takes on added import due to the international furor that has followed Russia's March 4 poisoning of a British intelligence agent and his daughter. Putin did not expect the diplomatic blowback that has followed that attack and has been unable to extricate Russia from it.
Put simply, Putin wants Assad's chemical antics off the news radar.

Indeed the World Cup.
Probably isn’t good enough with nukes.
Rohan’s a warmongering neocon. Thinks the Iraq invasion was wonderful, never mind all the slaughtered Christians. Now, it’s Syrias Christians who face genocide when the Rogan-McCain regime change gets implemented
Saudi Arabia comes first with the folks who want military action.
Ask any street cop what happens when someone weaker (and both sides know they are weaker) keeps enduring one humiliating insult after another.
Eventually, even an earthworm will do something and it’s usually very unexpected. This “they won’t hit back” game will end one day, and it should sicken Americans to risk that for a bunch of Sunni head choppers.
When you start a war with the idea, they’ll never fight back, you are in good company.
The Japs thought Pearl Harbor would quickly wind up with us suing for peace.
The Germans thought “if you kick in the door the whole Russian rotten house would cave in”.
We thought the Norks would never attack south and had a woefully underprepared occupation force there.
In WWI, people expected a short war of a few weeks.
In the Civil war people expected a few weeks at most and took picnics to the battlefield.
History is fulled with the hubris of “they won’t dare resist” Or “they will fold in a few months in the face of our power”.
Next thing you know you’re in a helicopter leaving the roof of the embassy in Saigon.
Rogan is only 32 years old. If he thinks endless war is so important, why hasn’t he enlisted yet?
...and if Putin takes out a city or two, WHAT THE HELL! We still would have taught him a lesson that we’re willing to trade New York City for 60 pre-terrorists.
Exactly — if Assad goes, the Syrian Christians will face genocide. All thanks to the US+UK+France....
Explains why the West thinks it can get away with this blatant war mongering...thanks for clarifying.
Good post.
I am furious. More damn nation building. What a waste.
I disagree with the premise of the article. Assad had every reason not to do what is being claimed.
Everyone in our government should read your comment - and then publicly declare if they think a war with Russia is a good idea, even if it is unlikely.
And what exactly was that? Has it been proven enough to put America at risk of getting into a conflict with Russia? What did Assad have to gain to gas a rebel group that was on the run?
I hope President Trump is listening more to the experts out there that say it is a false flag but the deep state that is trying to drag us into something to derail our recovery.
The big question is, will President Trump fall for it and looks like he is headed in that direction. What a crying a$$ shame
Source?
They deny Assad even did it so based on that associating themselves with Assad isn't a problem. And they can't not defend him.
More importantly, however, Putin knows that these U.S. strikes will not endanger Assad's continued empowerment and thus Moscow's overriding strategic interests
I can't disagree with that. Especially if our response is to shoot up another air base that'll be back in action within a few days.
For what? The highway or the pipeline?
