Kristol on Cohen Raid: ‘This Is War’ – ‘Very Close Now to the End Game’ of Mueller Investigation

On Monday’s broadcast of CNN’s “The Lead,” Weekly Standard Editor-at-Large Bill Kristol reacted to the raid of Trump lawyer Michael Cohen by stating he believes the move is either part of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, or in concert with Mueller’s wishes. He further said that the move is “war” and “shows that we are very close now to the end game.”

Kristol said, “[I]f Robert Mueller asked the Southern District of New York not to do this now, they would have held off. I mean, he has sort of precedence here. So, I’m a little doubtful that this is not either part of his investigation or in accord with his wishes. I mean, this is a huge escalation. They obviously can’t use privileged documents. They’ll have to set those aside. They’ll be reviewed by — as I understand it, a third party reviews them and they set what’s privileged and not. But this is war. …

Or the SOB plants “evidence”.... in keeping with using false documentation and shopping pliable FISA court judges to get surveillance done on innocent people. A cold civil war to be exact. If people like Kristol and Mueller are successful, we will have a full-blown Second Civil War. Mueller's investigation is an attempted coup. If the Democrats take the House and Senate, they will attempt to remove President Trump and Vice President Pence from office so that the Democrat's Speaker of the House could be installed in the White House.

I am not going to judge Mueller until he issues his final report. If he issues a report saying that he did an exhaustive search for evidence but found nothing then I congratulate him on a thorough job. If he issues a stinging attack on Trump just before the election but brings no criminal charges of Trump personnel other than charges based on perjury traps, then he’s a stooge and a failure.

This is another tactic to taunt the President. A bullying tactic. Mueller doesn’t have the jurisdiction to do this though. He found a sympathetic judge or magistrate to accommodate him.

Pretty hard for any Democrat to cry foul when their attorney’s office gets raided in the future after saying nothing, nor defending Trump, when his got raided.

Maybe. But what he’s really investigating is not Stormy or the payments but rather the GPS dossier. Cohen is mentioned in the dossier. He’s going to waterboard Cohen to secure his cooperation. But the allegation on Cohen in the dossier is pretty hokey. I don’t think he’s going to get anything on him.

Just another self-promoter who enjoys the limelight, even if it is on CNN. Kristol does not challenge the search as having no connection to the “collusion” investigation. Rather, he simply says, and we are supposed to agree, that the search was proper because Mueller gave the order. I wonder how accepting Kristol would be if the government searched his attorney's office and took records of his interaction with his own lawyer. No doubt, Kristol would rediscover the importance of attorney-client privilege, and look through the fiction that a third party (who works for the FBI) will read everything and not allow privileged records to be used. If the government had issued a subpoena for the records, Cohen's lawyers could have redacted anything covered by the privilege and the government would have been required to convince a judge that the records were relevant and should be produced. A search warrant does away with that pesky little requirement.
