how to green the world's deserts and reverse climate change.
Ted Talks ^ | 3/4/2013 | Allan Savoy

Posted on 04/10/2018 7:29:59 AM PDT by DannyTN

This Ted Talk should be required viewing by every member of the BLM and the EPA.

The first couple of minutes he starts off talking like a typical climatologist, mentioning fossil fuels. But then he takes an interesting turn.

He's an Ecologist originally from Africa. And he's actually been responsible for implementing a number of land management policies throughout his career that have failed miserably. His conclusions on land management end up being the opposite of what we commonly hear. And what's more, he's had a chance to implement those solutions on 5 different continents and has seen outstanding success.

If anything, it makes sense because it means more arable land.

But it may also alter weather patterns and could lead to some other area actually becoming a desert.

Also, the Amazon benefits from Sahara sand getting blown over the ocean because it is like a fertilizer.

Well, it’s better if you watch the video.
He has before and after pictures of both failed policies and successful policies.

Early in his career, he was instrumental in setting up reserves in Africa for wildlife that was free of livestock. Says he hated livestock and blamed them for desertification.

But desertification continued. So they decided their were too many elephants and they needed to reduce their population to what the land would support.

They killed 40,000 elephants but that didn’t work either. The desertification got worse.

He talks about several causes of desertification.

He talks about what’s necessary to keep moisture from evaporating from the land.

If livestock isn’t eating the brush, the brush decomposes more slowly. But not in a way that protects the soil.

They used to manage the brush by controlled fires, but that causes desertification too.

Finally they compared to nature and realized nature had herd animals that constantly moved due to predators. They started emulating that. Putting herd animals on the land and causing them to move frequently. The results were pretty amazing according to the pictures.

The desert becomes a huge carbon sink as it returns to health. And the healthy soil breaks down methane from the animals.

Well worth the watch.

Ha!

I’m tired.

I thought it was something about dessert causing global warming.

How do you green up dessert?

For the record, I have always told my kids that change is the only constant, so climate change is nothing new. I don’t believe there is man made global warming (or cooling). There are other forces that have much more impact than we do. I also don’t believe that CO2 is a pollutant. When there’s more CO2, plant life blossoms! This all natural, the way it’s supposed to be.

Are those organic marshmallows in vegan jello?

Are the manufacturers environmentally responsible and socially aware?

Solution: Import a million South African farmers before their land is taken and they are killed. Irrigate the Nevada desert and California’s central valley. Turn them both red. South Africa has a water problem. They know how to conserve.

Same thing here with Buffalo....

Buffalo hooves are different, unlike cattle theirs actually churn up (till) the soil and they do not compress it like cattle. Take your average Buffy, 40lbs or more of intake and then output is a predigested pile of fertilizer and the urine which comes out as ammonia primarily turns to nitrogen as it hits and mixes in the soil. Like a walking running rototiller and fertilizer machine. They are not afraid of wolves or other predators, snow is no big deal to them and pound for pound they are tastier and better for you than Cattle.

When the pioneers first crossed the plains the buffalo grass was so tall that a man on horseback could not be seen in places!

Just MHO but Buffalo Ranching is growing quickly, look it up, they are native animals here and Cattle were the invasive species brought here by the Spaniards!

Tatonka!

I agree. There may be man made changes. But God is in control of climate. And He put self regulating systems in place. And I don’t think CO2 is anything to worry about.

However, it would be nice to see the deserts greened and this is a very interesting video.

Sahara sand is not enough to fertilize the Amazon.

We have SUVs for that
