Police officers responding to reports of a man threatening people with a gun on Wednesday fatally shot a man carrying a metal pipe, mistaking it for a firearm, police said.
It happened just before 5 p.m. in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn after three 911 callers said a "man was pointing a silver firearm at people on the street," according to NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan.

One of the articles said he went into a shooting stance and aimed at the officers. But 8 rounds in the back does not support that at all.
” Four officers were treated for minor injuries.”
Cha-ching! How did they get hurt?
Saving the cop suckers from having to post their usual toe licking excuses for cops gunning down someone who was not committing a crime
Agree, we don’t know the whole story. And this is not the place for justice to be applied.
It is tragic that the mentally handicapped person is dead.
I do not throw rocks at police, it is a tough job. They do however make mistakes. At times costly mistakes.
Law enforcement like all government functions should be local as much as possible. Local in a big city is impossible.

Yes, you are correct the bottom portion of the article does not relate to this incident. That is not clear, very confusing. Almost to point of being criminal, by the writer.
And yes, it was at night. That is apparent in photo with article.
Thanks for that clarification of prior bad reporting.
Here is another article that is also much clearer. Includes photo of the “pipe” he was carrying:

Actually we do
And this is not the place for justice to be applied.
You seem to have confused a discussion forum with a courtroom. We're not applying justice, we're discussing what appears to be a careless murder of a mentally deficient individual by cops who are empowered by their immunity to prosecution for acts that would get the rest of us serious jail time. Police should be held to a HIGHER standard than the rest of us, but in fact they aren't held to much of any standard other than what boils down to "it seemed to be the thing to do at the time."
I understand you point of view. I’m not making excuses for mistakes of police officers. They are made. Some are fatal. And the more we militarize the police the worse the problem will get.
Nor do I understand what it is like to live in NY City. Nor do I want to.
Wait wait wait: "Jaccpot"?
And his younger twin brothers, Sh!tpot and P!sspot ...
I know, credibility issue. But the guy is dead. That is not in dispute.
Relative said he was bipolar.
