Police: Officers mistake pipe for gun, fatally shoot man

Police officers responding to reports of a man threatening people with a gun on Wednesday fatally shot a man carrying a metal pipe, mistaking it for a firearm, police said.
It happened just before 5 p.m. in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn after three 911 callers said a "man was pointing a silver firearm at people on the street," according to NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan.

Dr. Bennet Omalu announced that Clark was hit by eight bullets — six in the back, one in the neck and one in the thigh — and took three to 10 minutes to die. Police waited about five minutes before rendering medical aid.

.... BTW ..... Safety Tip #1 ... When being confronted by Police Officers .... When told to show your hands ..... Probably not a Great Idea to decide that its a great time to reach into your pants and grab your junk. Well .... Or Pipe.

I have a half inch SS pipe I bent into a walking cane just before I retired from the pipe shop. It is also silver. Hope I don’t get shot walking down the street with it.

Possibly, but there was quite a bit of detail, you would have thought that would have been mentioned.
But you never know with AP, some articles are very accurate, many are not.
