Beto O'Rourke Says Ted Cruz and Donald Trump "Want You to Be Afraid of Mexicans

U.S. Rep. Beto O'Rourke, D-El Paso, lit into U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz and President Donald Trump during an interview in Waco on Tuesday, suggesting the two Republicans were inciting fear in Texas voters.

"Let me tell you what the president and our junior senator are doing right now," he said at an event hosted by The Texas Tribune. O'Rourke was being interviewed by the Tribune's CEO, Evan Smith. "They want you to be afraid of Mexicans. When they call them rapists and criminals, and say only a wall will keep them out."

O'Rourke is challenging Cruz in the November election. During the interview, he often referred to Cruz as "our junior senator," rather than by name. And he criticized Cruz and Trump on their positions regarding LGBT people.

"And that ... is bullshit, and we've got to be bigger and stronger and more courageous than that," he added. "And I know that we are. I know that we are."

Cruz responded on Twitter later Tuesday: "Liberal Dems — like Hillary and @BetoORourke — say anyone who wants to secure the border and end sanctuary cities must be a bigot and 'hate Mexicans.' That’s a nasty insult directed at millions of Texans who welcome legal immigrants (like my Dad), but also respect rule of law."

The remarks come the same day O'Rourke's campaign said it raised $6.7 million in the first quarter of 2018. He said 70 percent of that money was raised within the state. Cruz has yet to release his fundraising haul for the same time period.

I’m not worried too much about the Mexicans, it is their dim co-conspirators that worry me.

You shouldn’t fear Mexicans, but you should definitely fear Mexican culture—look what it did to Mexico.

I live in National City, right next to San Diego. I'm here because it's the only place around here where I can afford a decent apartment (a one-bdrm $1,025/month). The population is 67% Mexican. I'm not afraid of them because I rub elbows with them every time I leave my unit.

Come to Pacoima and other areas where they have congregated, You would not know the difference between Tijuana. They have a Culture of Poverty and Squalor. Be Afraid of their Culture Spreading!

Sorry to hear that Sheana. You’ve pretty well nailed it for areas around me also. In the daytime, not too much issue if you use your head. At night, you’re just asking for it if you go into these areas. You may be lucky 9 times out of 10. That 10th time can be a game-changer/ender.

When I think of those areas, I realize there are good people who have been trapped there. They are why we need to clean up these areas.

I get a kick out of the people who get upset that law enforcement arrests so many people of their demographic, but as you touched on, they’re the ones committing top level crimes.

Look at all the kids shot in these neighborhoods.

In the old days you could go to the arcade at Frontier Land at Disneyland. Now the youth just drive down city streets at night, and shoot any target that moves.

When I first got stationed at Altus, OK, I was still in my prime and built like the proverbial "brick outhouse" - and back then my Indian heritage showed with a rich reddish brown tan. Walked into a local bar for some beer and pool and there were 5 Mexicans sitting at a table and nobody else in the place except the bartender. They looked at me and whispered among themselves and one of them got up and walked over to me and then around me and finally stopped in front of me. He looked me in the eye and said, "We was discussing whether you was a White boy because that would have concerned us". I replied, "No problem, I was half afraid Y'all might be Mexicans and that would have concerned me."

They guy looked at me, then at the table with the others and they started rolling with laughter which flustered him for a second and then he joined in - had a decent day drinking beer and kicking their asses on the pool table.

I later found out the local joke was, "How do you define a Texan - a Mexican on his way to Oklahoma".

The bar was just a skip and scurry from "The projects" but that's a whole other story...
