President Trump is telling the U.S. military to prepare for the withdrawal of troops from Syria, but has chosen not to pull American forces until ISIS is absolutely defeated.
U.S. officials say the president was hesitant about keeping the 2,000 troops in the war torn country, but did so in an effort to commit to his promise to destroy the Islamic State.

The United States and our partners remain committed to eliminating the small ISIS presence in Syria that our forces have not already eradicated, announced Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. We will continue to consult with our allies and friends regarding future plans.
The president reportedly said the U.S. military could also stay to train local forces in an effort to prevent the resurgence of ISIS militants.
This comes after President Trump said he wanted to bring the troops home despite military experts advising against exiting the conflict altogether.
I agree with getting out altogether. I also agree with 100% destruction of ISIS and any ISIS links before that exit.
So we’re getting ready to pull our troops out of Syria real soon except for the ones we’re leaving there?
just checked my dictionary. Can’t seem to find ‘real soon’ defined.
American troops are providing security in the Kurdish enclave of Manbij and guarding oil fields south of Deir ez-Zor...neither function could be described as ‘fighting ISIS’.
Trump is getting played by his national security team.
ISIS is degraded enough for Syria and its allies to do the mop up. Unless our troops are on Syria’s northern border keeping Turkey out of there, we should get out. We’re an uninvited invasion force.
hat does defeated mean ? surround them then let them go home ?
2,000 Americans in Injun country where the Injuns are all starting to rally against the “ occupiers” which we are
” Dont worry General Custer, we got this”
Bad decision
ISIS is going to have a new recruiting tool
Our presence
I believe some of President Trump’s staff used to read FR, and get a feel for what his supporters wanted. They must have all left the building because staying in Syria is Not Wanted by most.
I exclude from my assessment two groups on FR who are very vocal, but that I believe are in the minority.
I don't think US troops will be of any use now. Just keep them all in Israel.
You make a good point. Obama and McCain wanted to topple Assad and caused the disruption in Syria by funding ISIS.
Russia was the initial death knell for Syrian ISIS. Trump will probably be the final. But Russia will stay. They will not vacate their decades old naval base in Syria just for warm fuzzies.
Here’s some support for Trump from an unlikely source:
Yep. We weren’t in Syria before, and Israel had a hard time, but they did fine with it, taking out Hamas attacks, NBC programs, anti-aircraft emplacements.
The Kurds deserve something from us in Iraq and Syria. I think we should advocate a homeland for them out of Syria/Iraq, but I doubt we’ll do it.
They are Sunnis. You’d think Saudi would be all in favor of it.
Yes, though the time to do it was right after we took Iraq—not that we should have taken Iraq at all, mind you.
We could give incentives for them to have a semi-autonomous territory, at least. What they also really need is protection from Turkey.
