Opinion: Trump could have used the migrant caravan to his advantage. But he's not that smart
NBC "News" ^ | April 4, 2018 | by Gustavo Arellano

Sending troops to the border not only violates American law, it is the least politically savvy play the president could make.

Donald Trump is threatening to place soldiers on the U.S.-Mexico border to face off against a thousand-strong caravan of Central Americans who started in Honduras and are slowly winding their way through Mexico and plan to enter los Estados Unidos. And I can’t wait: Those refugees need Marines to protect them from ICE agents.

Our Coast Guard should have bulk tents, water, food and showers for everyone who shows up. And who better than Uncle Sam’s troops to offer a formal apology for directly and indirectly creating the conditions that have forced so many Central Americans to make the trek north over the past four decades in the first place.

So, unlike many of my fellow open-borderistas, I welcome news that Donald Trump wants to send in the troops. It’ll be far more cost-effective than a border wall, and it wouldn't hurt to call back our fighting men, women and transgender people from all of our imperialist adventures across the world and place them on la frontera.

Alas, my dream won’t happen. Brigades-on-the-border are just another saber rattle by a president who always seeks scapegoats among the most oppressed of people. He’s found a perfect candidate with this caravan, which he has already cast as evil-doers whom must be kept out, regardless of the Constitution, federal law or the federal budget.

If any of those in the caravan get sent back and die at the hands of the people they traveled so far to escape, the blood will be on Trump’s hands. Our troops deserve better than to be used as pawns in some reality-show reality by a power-hungry and attention-seeking tyrant.

“Sending troops to the border not only violates American law, it is the least politically savvy play the president could make.” The sentence screamed “DON’T READ ANY MORE OF THIS GARBAGE!” and I listened. This drooling half wit is clearly under the false impression that he is another country. Hey pal this is America and we will not be bum rushed by scumbags looking to steal our country.

So let me get this straight. When the Japanese attacked earl Harbor we should have called out the Police, the Border Patrol or the Coast Guard, using the US Navy would have been against the law ?

The left is trying to claim that using the military to protect the border violates the Posse Comitatus Act. It doesn’t boder control is not a domestic policy but an act to protect national security fro foreign invaders.

Oh good grief, another crybaby liberal pointing out the obvious....there are poor people in the world.....yeah, but they can’t all come here.....we do, and always have welcomed immigrants who come legally to our shores....a caravan through Mexico isn’t the way. Mexico is a free country, just stay there. It is indeed legal to send troopa to the border, has been done MANY times. They can assist border Patrol agents but they, themselves, have no arrest powers.

MARK SIMONE ‏ Verified account @MarkSimoneNY 22h22 hours ago More The President will send troops to defend the border. There, I fixed it.

That's what some idiots suggest.

If the Southern Border is to be perpetual ‘Open’, is the Europeans equally welcome to travel to America and stay?

>>They are not allowed to act as police, but they are very much allowed to act as spotters for the border patrol.<<

The President and those of us who support him should be rejecting the argument that turning away invaders is in any way a “police” action. Instead the turning away of invaders should be deemed a military action for the very good reason that that is exactly what it is.

It oughta be. Trying to make us believe that PDJT would suddenly become beloved by the left. And that the base would not be infuriated further.

It is less than satire. A bad joke.

Someone direct Gustavo to the border history 1910 to 1917. Regulars and federalized Guard were encmped along the border from West Texas through Arizona. Hemight also investigate the Plan de San Diego.
