Don’t think I’d want to be that skipper.

.. By the time repairs could be made in early January, however, winter ice had already set in and the ship and her crew were stuck pier-side for the winter.

based on that statement, I don't think the skipper can be faulted

More likely it’s Russian collusion of some sort.

We don’t have icebreakers? Canada doesn’t have icebreakers?

LCS: Little Crappy Ship. Can’t fight, can’t run, can’t do much of anything. The Navy’s F-35.

Montreal for three months? Not bad duty if you’re a young sailor ... some of the prettiest women in Canada reside in Montreal. However, what likely happened only a skeleton crew remained on board and the rest of the crew were bused or flown back to their home port.

Do they need bubblers around the ship to prevent ice damage?

There are worse places to be stuck than Montreal.

I can imagine the CNO at his desk, writing:

"Note... to... self:....... To... avoid... further... embarrassment... for... the... Navy,... Littoral... Combat... Ships... must... be... kept... away... from... combat... and... can... only... be... deployed... in... warm... climates..."

I knew a guy who was in the Coast Guard back in the mid 70’s and one of his claims was while he was serving on an ice breaker, it was the first and maybe only year the seaway was kept open all season.
