Students at Rockledge High School in central Florida staged a walkout Friday in response to the Parkland, Florida school shooting, but in contrast to a national walkout last month, this one was in support of gun rights.
Students Chloe Deaton and Anna Delaney organized the event, and dozens of students turned out, WFTV Orlando reported. Two weeks ago, students at Rockledge and around the country walked out of schools during the National School Walkout, a movement organized by gun control activists. Some students who support gun rights said their voices were silenced.
"Im just saying that we should not let our rights be taken because someone else does something wrong," said Deaton.
The students organizing the walkout said many students agreed with the Second Amendment, even though they did not receive the same attention from the national media as those who support stricter gun control.
"There are many people that dont agree, but we have just as many who agree with us and are going to come out here today and support us," Delaney said.
Some students who took part in the pro-Second Amendment walkout held American flags or signs about the importance of gun rights. The students said they wanted to discuss public policy actions related to gun ownership but they would not tolerate infringement on the right to keep and bear arms.
"Im pro-Second Amendment. I wouldnt mind deeper background checks, of course, but the Second Amendment will not be infringed upon," Delaney said.
Reporter Melonie Holt described the walkout as "orderly and brief" and said it lasted only about 20 minutes.
It already has been infringed when parents did not dare show up at schools to force administrators to do their job promoting education insteas of politics
Not all of Florida is like Broward county...
Good Work Gyrlz....
Nice.. Wonder if the Cocoa Beach ‘Minutemen’ still have the muskets on display near the admin offices. Gotta love Brevard County, FL.
Hurrah!
There should be a grassroots action demanding a course in familiarization with guns and hand weapons of all kinds be made compulsory for all students in high school, or even earlier, like middle school. So at least attempt to demystify guns, and the tactics on how to deal with active shooter situations, by avoidance, evasion, escape or even attempts to distract or somehow neutralize the active shooter.
In fact, active training in the care, feeding, grooming and proper handling of weapons should be part of an advanced course. By the time instruction has progressed this far, the potentially habitually careless, or the ones with malice in their minds, would be much more easily identified, and appropriate action taken.
For the perpetually timid, perhaps tattooing the name and Social Security number somewhere on their bodies would greatly assist in identifying the bodies in the aftermath of an active shooter incident.
Will the protesters be disciplined for skipping out? If so, will the original anti-2nd protesters be punished, too?
If not, won't everyone get in on the act, protesting any cause from saving whales to whose lives "really" matter more than others, and so on and on.
This could get impossible to control...or to learn anything useful in school.
True.
Good point.
IIRC there was a walk out over something when I was in 9th grade, I stayed in my seat.
Thanks for posting this. Good news!
