Wow, there’s a band I haven’t heard or thought about in ages.

Too many bands and too many years have past. LOL

I agree! I wore that album out playing it so much.

I loved Genesis when Peter was with them. I liked them later, too, but they went more mainstream.

IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A HIT

The Hollies were already established in the UK when this became their first American entry in 1965. It got some air play and was what disk jockeys call a “turntable hit,” i.e. a record that gets played a lot but doesn’t sell. Graham Nash would later go on to stardom, and songwriter Graham Gouldman would write more successful songs for the Hollies and for Herman’s Hermits, eventually joining 10cc.

And they were all like 20 years old when they made that album.

And to think that when Ant Phillips left, they almost quit right there.

Marianne Faithful’s “As Tears Go By” was a hit in Southern California, where it got a lot of airplay on KRLA in the fall of ‘64.

You’ll get a kick out of this....

It’s a scene from the show “You’re The Worst” where the couple argue over Peter Gabriel or Phil Collins.....

I vaguely remember her version of the song getting some airplay but it didn’t get nearly as much as the Stones’ version, for sure.

Indeed it is classic Genesis. Loved them back in those days.
Still like their later stuff and Phil’s solo stuff too.
But I like Peter’s solo stuff a bit more.

IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A HIT

P. F. Sloan is remembered today for the immortal guitar riff that sets the table for the Mamas & the Papas’ “California Dreaming,” along with songs he wrote like “Eve of Destruction” and “Let Me Be.” He ended up being remembered as a songwriter with only a few songs in him. Jimmy Webb would later make fun of Sloan in a song of his own, which got him involved in a messy court case.

This song would become a 1965 turntable hit for Jan & Dean and the last song of theirs that would chart. It may have been Sloan’s best song and captures the magic moment in the life of a teenage nerd, geek, dweeb or poindexter, when he finally finds a girl who is interested in him. That’s the Wrecking Crew with a masterpiece of production.

Jan & Dean: “I Found a Girl”

They looked like babies, especially Peter! LOL! Sooooo young but very talented.
Same can be said for EL&P. Look at videos of their beginning years and holy cow!

Makes me feel old.

One thing I do love about Phil is his sense of humor. It comes out in a lot of his videos too.

Oh boy, thanks Publius, this is great stuff.

It's fun hearing the background of these hits I grew-up with.
