IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A HITMarianne today is a nicotine-ridden hag with an occasional guest appearance on British sitcoms, but back in the day she was a beauty. One does not usually think of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards writing a beautiful song, but this 1964 version was a gem backed by a wonderful oboe and string track. The Rolling Stones would later turn this into a hit on their own, backed by a string quartet, but this version, a hit in the UK, languished in the states.

I got nothing against Phil Collins but this is Classic Genesis.
What a weird band. Phil is probably the hardest working man in rock history but old Genesis rocked

Some other beautiful songs by the Stones:
Wild Horses
Angie
Moonlight Mile
Waiting on a Friend
and, of course, their own version of As Tears Go By.
I have always loved the Stones and include a number of their songs in my own repertoire.
I had the single of the Marianne Faithful version as well! :-)

Busy is better than bored any day. :-)
Very nice that the waiter put a bright spot in your day last weekend. That should happen on a fairly regular basis, imho. Too many get wrapped up in their lives and don’t take the time to think about WHO has made sure they have the freedoms they enjoy. Without you and so many others who serve and have served, those freedoms could be lost so easily.
You certainly have my heart-felt thanks and appreciation.
As does that young waiter who has chosen to serve and continue the protection of our country.

IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A HITThis was a significant hit in the UK in late 1964 and got a lot of Canadian air play, but it got little action in the states. The melody and harmonies are haunting.

IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A HITDusty Springfield was an Irish girl who wanted to be black. (She also had a taste for the ladies, but thats a whole other story.) She eventually got her wish when she signed with Ahmet Erteguns Atlantic Records in 1968 and worked with Jerry Wexler, who was Aretha Franklins producer. This recording from 1965 is from her Eurorock days, but it gives her a chance to sound like Martha Reeves. It didnt score, but its a hint of what was to come.
