In what Reuters has dubbed a massive show of force, dozens of Chinese warships have been observed on satellite imagery, exercising with an aircraft carrier and warplanes above the heavily-disputed South China Sea, as part of the previously noted massive military drills, which the PLA ominously said were in preparation for war.
The four images, provided by Planet Labs for Reuters confirms the Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning joined the annual naval war drill earlier this week.
According to the Taiwan Defense & National Security ministry, late last week Taiwan sent two ships and military aircraft to shadow the Chinese aircraft carrier group through the narrow Taiwan Strait.
The images, taken on Monday by Planet Labs flock of miniature satellites, show at least forty naval vessels, submarines, and aircraft in what some military strategist described as an unusually large display of the Chinese militarys growing naval might, said Reuters.

Targets.................
Does China really want to go to war with the world?
I hope the USS McCain doesn’t crash into any of them.
Couple of wolf class subs could cause lots of havoc.
I think their regime would if that’s what was required to maintain control at home.
Don’t most countries [with navies] engage in naval exercises?
Massive show of cheap, knock-off crap
A recent novel I read, “Hunter Killer” by David Poyer, details how nasty a Western Pacific war would be. The author has personally been there and I was pretty wrung out after finishing it.
Q: Why do ships float?
A: The U.S. Submarine Service allow it.
It’d be worse by 1000 times over anything in WWII.
Easily millions dead in a matter of days.
I am about to read a free sample from Amazon. But my easy prediction is the Chinese have the modern maritime equivalent of anti-tank missiles taking out armor. That our aircraft carriers are sitting ducks for Chinese hyper sonic missiles.
The Chinese leaders have it too good to want to risk losing everything.
Who is threatening them?
They will bluster and cry, but risk what they now have?
Why would they?
Not the world, just the nations within their region. Like the Japanese in the 1930s, they probably think they can get what they want without the other powers interfering.
Dragon Navy ping.
I doubt it would take long to go nuclear.
The US Navy aside, and though they don’t have fleet carriers the Navies of Japan and South Korea combined, are probably equivalent to China’s Navy.
We may get to vaporize North Korea. That could show them that we have the will.
Thats all China keeps them around for any way.
They may have the missiles, but their ships have to get close enough to launch, and our subs would prevent that.
I imagine if someone took out one of our aircraft carriers with over 5,000 people onboard, a tactical nuke on their fleet might not be out of the question.
