As Liliana picks lice from the tangled, thick hair of her boyfriend, Patricio, while they sit together on the sidewalk of a Caracas street, she’s also multi-tasking, keeping a watchful eye on her “family.” When a 10-year-old girl named Danianyeliz kneels down to drink water from a puddle, Liliana reproaches her, urging her to have a sip from a juice bottle they’ve just found in a garbage bag.
At 16, Liliana has become the mother figure for a gang of Venezuelan children and young adults called the Chacao, named after the neighborhood they’ve claimed as their territory. The 15 members, ranging in age from 10 to 23, work together to survive vicious fights for “quality” garbage in crumbling, shortage-plagued Venezuela. Their weapons are knives and sticks and machetes. The prize? Garbage that contains food good enough to eat.

Venezuela is close to the equator. As with many countries on or toward the equator, that defines it well enough. Pour enough money into it for a while, and it gets pretty shiny right around its tourist corrals. Stop pouring tourist, celebrity and big corporate money into it, and it goes south again.
Those poor kids...sad.
That’s what a lot of them voted for and it ruined much of Central America as well. Get the descendants of Europeans out of power. It wasn’t perfect, but this is what they ended up with.

It is always easy to come up with hypothetical excuses.
Most of the world is a sh*thole. The left desperately wants to equal the playing field in America. I have been to Haiti and Iraq. Not all cultures are equal is an understatement. Venezuela has the oil and other natural resources to be self sufficient with a high quality of life but they chose Socialism. When we import these people, many without a higher education or a desire to truly assimilate will only treat America as their former failed country and vote accordingly.
This is where Trump is a Huge asset! I have a soft spot for the people of Venezuela. The animals have been long ago consumed by the starving population. Zoo too.
There needs to be a machete ban.

Since we’re being told the entire country is starving, how is it there is any garbage fit to eat? Servants of the elite will have already scavenged their over loards’ garbage.

This is the inevitable result of striving for 'equality of outcome.' It isn't possible for everyone to be rich but it is very possible for everyone to be destitute.
