The Atlanta Chief of Police said her officers will no longer respond to shoplifting calls at stores in Buckhead.
Erika Shields said staff shortages, in excess of 300 officers, has forced her to reevaluate how to deploy officers. In the affluent section north of downtown, Shields said, the APD Zone Two officers frequently get calls from merchants to do a report on a shoplifter who has been caught by store security. After filling out the paperwork, the officer then must arrange a transport to the Atlanta City Jail in downtown.
All that can take up to an hour and a half to complete. The chief believes that time can be better spent by having those officers handle serious crimes, from burglaries to carjackings.
Shields said if a shoplifting takes place, the larceny can still be reported and will be counted in the APD stats. The chief puts the onus on the merchant to file the incident and, if necessary, spend the funds to hire an off-duty Atlanta or metro officer who can make the sure the culprit is made to pay for his crime.
A Buckhead resident and community leader, Roslyn Smith, is "disappointed" the city is in the position where staff shortages is leaving the chief with such a choice.
"Personally, I am not going to feel comfortable going to shop," Smith said.
As for filling the gap in manpower, Chief Shields said, a pay study is being prepared that she will present to Mayor Keisha Bottoms in the hopes of making her officers among the highest salaried law enforcement in the area.

CORRECT!!! If persons are not subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice, then they are civilians. (except for VERY limited circumstances such as traveling on military aircraft, ships, and certain circumstances arising during co-location with deployed military units overseas )
Then just shoot the thieves.
I bet we can ascertain the demographic being spoken of here.
They will just set up a perimeter stance around your store.
That’s exactly right!
How is it that they’re are so many female/ minority police chiefs nowadays when they are certainly not the majority of police officers ?
I guess they must be so much more qualified and capable; kinda like Holder and Lynch, right ?
“Her name is Keisha Lance Bottoms. (snicker, snicker).”
OMG,I almost choked when I read that.:-)
.
First of all they do not need to transport and lock up shoplifters. Issue them a summons to appear and release on their own recognizance.
Second, this is far worse than it appears. It reveals a major weakness that could be easily exploited. The city (and most cities I presume) are telegraphing that they are unable to “fight 2 wars” as it were. Organize a few 100 people to each create large disturbances in different parts of the city, the police (and the city) will be completely paralyzed.
Damn, I need to go “shopping” in Atlanta. Free stuff for every one.
True and that's the whole point of anarchotyranny. You discipline a kid and have a SWAT team bust down your door while the strong-arm shoplifter struts around free.
“...I walk right through the door
and if I get by,
it’s mine,
mine all mine...”
I knew a shorter and slightly stockier version of the one at the podium.
Same eyes, hairstyle, and a mega-liberal.
Next time leftists ask, this why we need firearms with high capacity mags. The police don’t protect and deter. When they fail to do their job we are at risk.
Theft will triple.
Whooohooo! Black Friday forever. Better
get to the stores before all the good
stuff is gone!
One of my eldest son’s girlfriends is an armed IRS agent. She referred to civilians once. I reminded her that she was only a federal cop not military. My son who was the fire inspector for a local city also jumped in her shit.
What could possibly go wrong?
Yep. They are federal civilian employees, whether they carry some type of badge and gun or not, and they need to be reminded of this fact whenever they try to think otherwise.
