President Donald Trump briefly threatened to veto a giant spending bill on Friday and then reluctantly signed it to keep the military funded.
The lack of funding for a border wall with Mexico is likely one of the presidents biggest frustrations. Trump mentioned the wall when he threatened to veto the bill. The $1.3 trillion budget includes just $1.6 billion for wall construction along the southern border, far short of the $25 billion needed to accomplish Trumps signature campaign promise.
To make matters worse, the spending bill specifically prohibits Trump from building the kind of wall he wants. The president nevertheless celebrated the progress and pointed out that construction can begin immediately.
But Trump also dropped an eyebrow-raising hint that he could take an unprecedented option and build the wall using the enormous military budget.
I want to address the situation on border security, which I call national defense, Trump said. I call it stopping drugs from pouring across our border. And I call it illegal immigration. Its all of those things. But national defense is a very important two words. Because by having a strong border system, including a wall, we are in a position, militarily, that is very advantageous.
For the first time, Trump underlined the significance of the barrier as a military structure and a matter of national defense. Up to now, the president promoted the wall as a way to curtail illegal immigration and stop the deadly flood of illicit drugs. The introduction of the walls military function is significant, especially in terms of funding it.
Roughly half of the spending bill is dedicated to the military for a total of over $654 billion allotted to the Pentagons base budget and overseas counterinsurgency operations. Thats enough to build the wall 26 times.

I would damn sure go down there and work a week or even a month. For Free!
Proof-positive they know full well the kind of wall the president wants will work!
The Rio Grande take up the majority of the border and even Mexico says it needs levees and control of the flood plains.
Army Corp of Engineers and the Sea Bees, for sure. Plus they construct some airfields and Forward Operating Bases. Might as well militarize the border. What is being done presently is leaving large gaps, and ICE needs a helping hand that only the military could provide effectively.
Operation Repatriation. Can do!
The subtlety is that it does not prevent the MILITARY from building the all that Trump wants. :-)
After signing the bill the president told the press building the wall will begin Monday morning. Army Corp of engineers has been working on it since last July
Sane people know that Trumps fate and Americas fate are inextricably intertwined.
How many times in the past year has President Trump said or done something that caused so much pearl clutching and hand wringing in that, after a while, turned out to be the correct, best thing to have done or said...
Trump is NOT a fool...He knows what he’s doing...
Bullsh!t.
I’ve read it and been mentioning it for almost 2 days.
He already declared the national emergency on December the 21 Drug and human traffic I were mentioned
“The more the left hate him, the more certain I am that he is doing well.”
And by “The Left,” I assume you’re including McConnell and his bucket of cocks, and Ryan and his!
“I think well survive a Pence presidency”
Pence is a rino ponce. A GW Bush redux. He’ll bend over and lube up for the corrupt state just as GW did. With Hillary, the dems were one election away from never having to worry about elections again. That’s why the demoncrat controlled corrupt stasi state cannot afford to let Trump dismantle their ‘little’ playhouse. IOW, they would WELCOME a Pence presidency.
Coinkydink, Shirley ? ;-)
Trump IS CiC The military will go where he sends them.
I think well survive a Pence presidency,
Better ?
The Heritage Foundation says that Trump has already accomplished 64% of his agenda, far more than Reagan in his first year.
And you call that "hand-waving?"
Coinkydink, Shirley ? ;-)
