The Trump administration is being accused of racism for targeting an Obama-era directive compelling schools to ease up on discipline for minority students even though the policy has made life more difficult for kids, including minorities, stuck in increasingly unruly classrooms.
Ask Virginia Walden Ford, who runs a church-based after-school snack program in Little Rock. She was recently surprised when a young, fearful black girl turned up before the end of the school day and admitted she had skipped class.
Why? She had been involved in a fight the day before with another girl, but the school had refused to suspend her assailant, and she worried that the girl would try to pick a fight with her again.
She had been continually bullied all year long, recalled Ms. Ford, an EdChoice board member. My advice was, Talk to your counselor, teacher, parents, but she made it really, really clear to me that day that thats not doing any good. Her school does not want to suspend students. Theyre trying to keep the suspension rate down.
The girl isnt alone. Critics of the 2014 Dear Colleague an advisory on non-discriminatory school discipline, issued by the Department of Educations Office for Civil Rights say the policy has been enormously successful in reducing suspensions and expulsions, but its also made schools more chaotic, even dangerous.
By replacing suspensions with counseling, the schools have in some cases kept rowdy students in class while pushing out well-behaved students who either fear being attacked or have given up on trying to learn in poorly disciplined classrooms.

That poor girl.
NOT WINNING.
That is an excellent question.
I believe that everyone involved tried to keep a very low profile on it and the media sure didn't want it widely known.
Last month after the shooting was the first I'd heard of it.
Bump!
Is Sessions secretly working to repeal this policy?
This is very true down to at least 3rd Grade, as my saintly teacher-wife can attest.
The "leave no thug behind" has endangered the entire academic system with a lack of school discipline.
Be persistent, ..President Trump !
And eliminate the indoctrination programs of the Education Department
Better yet, eliminate the Education Department and fund the WALL !
It's a "Two-fer" !!
The more naive of us would call this “unintended consequences.
But no, that was the full intent.
“Most morons know that refusing to punish bad behavior only encourages more bad behavior. By tolerating bad behavior by minorities means you hold them to a lower standard, because they are inferior and are not capable of behaving any better.
Then they call me a bigot.”
Kind of like the democrats behavior.
yes, not only is there precious little good that any Federal level administration COULD do in the local school classroom
but USA was doing a better job of educating our children before we got a federal department
much better to abolish the damned thing, or most of it anyways (if there is anything really good and helpful going on there, transfer it back to the state and local levels where it belongs.. and close down the rubbish)
Obama directive easing school discipline for minority students fueling classroom chaos
No one saw this coming, nope, nobody uhn uhn, couldn’t see it coming, unintended consequences and all that.
At LEAST they aren’t HomeSchooled!!!
