A British woman fighting with a Kurdish armed unit has died in Syria, her father has said.
Anna Campbell, 26, from Lewes, East Sussex, died on March 15 in Afrin while with the Kurdish Women's Protection Units, the YPJ.
It is feared she was killed by Turkish airstrikes.
Ms Campbell - who had dyed her fair hair black so she would not stand out - is the first British woman to have been killed in Syria with the Kurds and the first Briton to be killed in the battle for Afrin.
Seven other Britons have died in the country while fighting alongside the groups.
Ms Campbell's father, Dirk, told the BBC she "wanted to create a better world and she would do everything in her power to do that".
He added: "I told her of course that she was putting her life in danger, which she knew full well she was doing. I feel I should have done more to persuade her to come back, but she was completely adamant."
The YPJ is an all-female brigade of the Kurdish People's Protection Units YPG, which has around 50,000 Kurdish men and women fighting against Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) in northern Syria.
The group has been defending the Kurdish-majority city of Afrin from Turkish forces backed by Syrian rebels after they launched an offensive in mid-January.
Ankara considers the YPG a terrorist group, an offshoot of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) which has led an insurgency in Turkey for decades.
Ms Campbell had been qualified plumber living in Bristol before she left to join the Kurdish militia in Syria.
Her friends and commanders are thought to have tried to dissuade her from going, saying it was too dangerous.
He said his daughter was an "incredibly principled, brave, determined, committed

What? You lost me somewhere dude. Fight? Profanity? I’m game? Brawl? What am I missing dude?
She didn’t get burned — she died an honorable death, and had a far better life than many of the chavs back home.
“” “’A major Moslem cleric in Turkey has called for a Million Moslem Army to invade and kill every Jew in Israel.
Whose side are you on? Hitlers memory is still fresh in our family.” “” “
Show me where I said I stand with the Turks? Kurds are right to oppose them but they are doing it wrong.
Syria isn't ruled by Iran and Alawites haven't been the cannon fodder to attackIsrael -- the last war they had was in the early 80s.
Assad does not bomb Christians - he protects them. Bluntly you want to removeAssad and you condemn the Christians of Syria, including the Christians of Damascus (the first place Christians were called CHRISTians) to death. Why would you want to do that?
Furthermore, during the battle of Britain the British allowed the Poles, etc. to fight for them and the Americans took part in the fighting later on — allies just as the hizb and Russia are Assad’s allies. Thanks toObama’s creation of the IS, the seculars in Syria needed some help.
Well, the message goes out quite clearly “Don’t be allied with the USA - they don’t look after their allies but abandon them. In contrast the Russians stick by their allies even when all seems lost” — that’s the perception and it is dangerous not only to the US in the middle east but elsewhere in the world.
The word terrorist is bandied about — I believe it shoudl be used only if civilians are specifically targeted with the aim of spreading terror. The PKK does not seem to do that (I may be wrong), so she was not a terrorist.
Turkey was an ally before Erdogan. Now, it has its own agenda that is contrary to NATO. It has a temporary agreement with Russia, but it has its own gameplan - I think it is a half-baked one by Erdogan, but that’s my opinion
I disagree with that. She fought for a cause she felt was right.
He was citing Yeni Safak - a ‘conservative’ (read Islamist) Turkish paper.
Not the Kurdish men. And not the Alawite or Yazidi or Shia men. Nor the Christian men. There are a few exceptions for this, but the majority of the migrants are Sunnis
in addition they do fight with Izlamonutters in the UK.
that being said, Turkey no longer should be in NATO
” gift for profanity “, no, for accuracy.
” I’m reluctant to brawl with women...”
I’m sure you are since they kick your butt every time.
‘”...let’s do it in public.”
Sorry, I really don’t want to so easily embarrass you.
No.
Why do you want thejihadis to win?
Remember that the Kurds were the ones who physically killed the Armenians during the genocide. it was masterminded by the Turks but the Kurds of that time committed the atrocities mainly.
Also the "Turks" of today are, genetically, hardly related to the Turkic peoples of central Asia. Genetically they are an admixture of Anatolians (hittites, Phyrgians, etc.), Greeks, Arabs, Assyrians, Persians, Kurds etc. etc.
Once you go Black, You never go Back.
Anyone who says Islam can be "reformed" doesn't know Islam or the meaning of the word reformation.
A Re-formation is an aim to "return to the original or perceived original" - hence the Christian reformation was where different people thought they were returning to the ways of the original Christians
But what were the original Christians? What was Christ like? They didn't go about killing or making war on other folks. The original Christian communities (leaving aside the dogma) were fellowships of equality and they did not make war on one another or outsiders. They argued with words, not weapons.
in contrast what was Muhammad and the Muhammadens like int eh begining? A warlord and his army.
THAT would be the Izlamik reformation.
And, an Izlamik reformation has already taken place in the 1700s with the rise of the Wahabbis. That lead to Saudia - that is the reformation center
What you are talking about, creating an "Islam tolerating other religions" is like creating a "Christianity that acknowledges Vishnu, Shiva, Thor etc. as equal gods with Yahweh and that Jesus never got resurrected" - i.e. you are askign for Iz to change its very DNA
If you do that, you end up wth a different religion - and those also fall apart when they come upon the character of Mo and allah -- look at Bahaiism or Ahmadiyyas.
No, Izlam cannot be made to play nicely with others.
Assad is the ONLY one who can keep peace in Syria right now.
Your statement is breathtakingly asinine.
This brave woman was a free individual—who gave her life doing what she wanted to do.
How dare you say that she wasted her life, when she was fighting for a cause she believed in!
It was her life, and her right to live it as she saw fit. Yeah, it's too bad that this woman chose not to be limited by the rigid role which you think she belonged in.
More of that "Know your place girl" BS. Unbelievable.
