~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Vandenberg Air Force Base, California

Vandenberg Air Force Base is a United States Air Force Base located 9.2 miles northwest of Lompoc, California. It is under the jurisdiction of the 30th Space Wing, Air Force Space Command (AFSPC).

Vandenberg AFB is a Department of Defense space and missile testing base, with a mission of placing satellites into polar orbit from the West Coast using expendable boosters (Pegasus, Taurus, Minotaur, Atlas V, Delta IV and now SpaceX's Falcon). Wing personnel also support the Service's LGM-30G Minuteman III Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Force Development Evaluation program.

The host unit at Vandenberg AFB is the 30th Space Wing. The 30th SW is home to the Western Range, manages Department of Defense space and missile testing, and places satellites into near-polar orbits from the West Coast.

Wing personnel also support the Air Force's Minuteman III Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Force Development Test and Evaluation program. The Western Range begins at the coastal boundaries of Vandenberg and extends westward from the California coast to the Western Pacific, including sites in Hawaii. Operations involve dozens of federal and commercial interests.

The 30th Launch Group is responsible for booster and satellite technical oversight and launch processing activities to include launch, integration and test operations. The group consists of an integrated military, civilian and contractor team with more than 250 personnel directly supporting operations from the Western Range.

The 30th Operations Group provides the core capability for West Coast spacelift and range operations. Operations professionals are responsible for operating and maintaining the Western Range for spacelift, missile test launch, aeronautical and space surveillance missions.

Today was a beautiful sunny day, but quite cold.

We are expecting snow on the first day of spring.

Today I went to visit an old friend of mine. She lives about 30 miles west of me at approximately the same Latitude.

However, to get to her house, one must travel NORTH on Rt 3 to the infamous “Braintree split”.
Then South on I93 (Which is actually NORTH on Rt 128)
Then SOUTH on I95 for many miles.
Then NORTH on I495 for as many miles as you just went SOUTH.
Then SOUTH on 126, turn left, WEST for a few miles, and the NORTH again.

A Giant ZIG ZAG of over 50 miles.

Sometimes I wish I could fly.

Sorry to hear Shibumi has passed away. I hadn’t seen any comments posted by him lately but didn’t realize anything so serious was going on with him. Sad news.

I just looked at a commuter rail map, and the nearest station to her is the end of the line at Forge Park 495 about 15 miles away. But that would necessitate driving all the way 10 miles SW to Abington, parking the car there, taking a train NE all the way into South Station in Downtown Boston, changing trains, and the traveling MANY miles SW to Forge Park 495, and arranging for someone to pick me up and drive NW to Hopedale. From the looks of it, probably 100 miles of travel in four different conveyances.

You can’t make this stuff up.

My son was stationed at Vandenburg AFB and lived in the small town of Lompoc. He was training for the missile program while there, after which he was stationed at FE Warren AFB in WY, where he was...in his words on Linkedin...
.
“Missile Combat Crew Officer for the Minuteman III system. Earned Air Force Space Command Crew Member Excellence Award following five consecutive Highly Qualified evaluations, all as a Deputy. Was the experienced Deputy for 3 Combat Crew Commander upgrade evaluations.” He spent lots of time in the missile silos around the area in WY and NE.

It was a very interesting and pretty place to visit and we toured the launch areas and drove up Highway 101 to Santa Barbara and the Hearst Mansion just for fun.

Actually, I think that’s a different one. Not the Castle, just one of his OTHER mansions!
