I still say one of the (largely) missed aspects of all of this is Insurance.
If I don’t design the car and I don’t drive the car — if the car has neither steering wheel nor brake pedals — then I don’t have to buy auto insurance. General Motors has to buy auto insurance. For millions of cars. And when accidents happen, the car company will be 100% to blame. Deep pockets. Lawyers will clean up on that.
If I dont design the car and I dont drive the car if the car has neither steering wheel nor brake pedals then I dont have to buy auto insurance.
...
You better have insurance if you don’t keep the car properly maintained, but other than that some liability will shift to the manufacturer. They’ll pass on the increased cost to the buyer.
However, the accident rate should go way down compared to what we have today, so the cost of transportation should go down.
” then I dont have to buy auto insurance. General Motors has to buy auto insurance.”
Great point. It follows what I’ve been saying, the deep pockets are the car companies, not individuals. They will be sued into oblivion after the first school bus crash.
Nope...that would be logical. No way a car and parts manufacturer will be liable for the inevitable deaths that will occur from driverless cars. The question is liability...which will be the owner regardless if he/she is in control of the car or not. My question is...will the insurance companies write paper on a car not being controlled by its owner? Or...will a buyer of the car cede his rights of incrimination to a machine? I know I wouldn’t!
The technology is easy.
The financial exposure for the manufacturers of these cars is not.
