Engineering experts say investigators looking into the collapsed instant bridge in Miami will want to know why a central tower which is usually built to support a suspension bridge was not in place when it collapsed onto Tamiami Trail on Thursday afternoon.
Last week, Florida International Universitys official Twitter account posted a rendering of the bridge in its completed form as envisioned by the planners before its opening to foot traffic in early 2019.
The rendering shows a tall central column with cables connecting it to the main span.
Engineers say the design is known as a cable-stayed bridge, which is a kind of suspension bridge, according to USA Today.

FIU had the political clout with people like Marco Rubio (he teaches a course there) to get the much large funds appropriated to build a really pretty cable stayed concrete bridge. Much better for FIU bragging rights than a plain ol utilitarian steel bridge.

It looks like it fails at one end. The impact of “resonances” from pedestrians would be inconsequential that close to the support. They would be at their maximum in the middle of the span.
We don’t need any stinking support gringo. There you go using English like your special or something.
Its reaction of the live loads, in tbis case foot traffic on the support system. Remember 9/11 and the pictures of all the people crossing the bridges on foot. There were serious concerns about that as it can create a harmonic rhythm that could lead to unexpected internal stresses.
“Who in the world would let cars go under a bridge, that does not have the support structure, and test it at the same time?”
Answer: Florida, the same state that essentially “allowed” Nick Cruz to go on a killing spreed at Parkland High School. I had a different impression of Florida until these latest events, now I rank it right behind New Jersey and Illinois as an “emerging $hit hole state!”
Was this an affirmative action contract award?

You have no idea what you’re talking about!
A post tension PCC structure is formed over an errected platform that remains in place until the structure is fully cured and the cables strung through tubes that were carefully placed in the forms before the concrete was placed.
The beams, deck, and bottom are what are poured!
I did the layout of the very first PT bridge that was built in the US.

“... why a central tower which is usually built to support a suspension bridge was not in place when it collapsed onto Tamiami Trail on Thursday afternoon.”

Perhaps it is not part of the design used by H1-B engineers.
That is very possible, and you could be right on. It makes no sense otherwise.
Well, there was a waterway to be crossed as well.
We still don’t know the proximate cause for the failure. The cable support column had to be constructed after the spans were inplace.
Aside from the error that resulted in failure, the primary error seems to be allowing traffic while work was in progress
.
I agree with your assertion, but anyway, it broke exactly where the workers stood.
.
“.... too phallic with the central tower.”
.
Too mosque-like perhaps.
Sadly, people had to die to find out the design is either flawed, materials bad, or kick backs for short cuts caused it to fail.
It still shocks me that anyone would test a bridge, while allowing cars to go under it, or not have cables and tower in place before testing!

>> “The cable support column had to be constructed after the spans were inplace” <<
That makes zero sense!
It should be the very first thing that was built.
.
LOL....I am glad I don’t have young children, school age, because it would be home schooling, or Christian School.
Perhaps it is not part of the design used by H1-B engineers.
= = =
The Tower has male Phallic symbolism.
So it is eliminated.
Understood. I suspect that was a coincidence, but I’m open to the possibility that they were a contributing factor in the collapse.
Shouldn’t that be followed by (sarc). lol
There is definitely steel in the bridge but I was expecting much more.3x or 4x times what I am seeing.
A rope bridge would have sufficed.
