Ohio student suspended for staying in class during walkouts

HILLIARD, Ohio – An Ohio high school student says he tried to remain nonpolitical during school walkouts over gun violence and was suspended for a day because he stayed in a classroom instead of joining protests or the alternative, a study hall.

Hilliard senior Jacob Shoemaker says school isn't the place for politics, and he wasn't taking sides Wednesday.

The district says it's responsible for students' safety and they can't be unsupervised. Jacob's citation for not following instructions was shared online by a friend, prompting a flood of messages to his father.

Scott Shoemaker says some people thought his son was suspended for walking out, and angry comments accumulated, including some that mistook Scott for the principal. He says he also got a couple death threats and had to consider switching phone numbers.

“Hilliard senior Jacob Shoemaker says school isn’t the place for politics, and he wasn’t taking sides Wednesday.”.....

Sound like Jacob is the only adult in that school. Law suit pending?

Modern public schooling is horrible.

Why are we paying for it? To create a class of worker drones?

Wrong. The title is correct.

Why she he be forced to miss classes and cot be educated?

Where are the teachers? Are they being paid their salaries to protest/

What if only 1-3 kids wished to protest? ... class is canceled?

Taxpayers and this student, Jacob, should sue the district.

He was denied his education that day because the school administration sought fit to parade the kids for political purposes. He didn’t pick this fight, it picked him.

...where I’m sure a teacher was present.

The 'teachers' were paid for the day to be IN the classroom. Why were they NOT in the classroom? Study Hall is a punishment. I would have refused as well. This boy was where he was supposed to be.

They were attending, but not participating in or supervising the “student-led” protest, of course.

Why didn't he just go to the study hall?

Why wasn't the teacher there doing his.her job?

“The now-viral story is false, district leaders said. Shoemaker says that the story is partially true, but not in the way the sharers are trying to spin it. “There are a lot of groups out there that are using this to push an agenda, and I don’t appreciate that,” said Shoemaker, whose son Jacob, a Hilliard Davidson High School senior, was suspended. Jacob Shoemaker said he felt as though he would be making a political statement about guns by walking out, his father said, but he also would be making one if he stayed in and allowed himself to be sent to wherever the nonprotesters were being rounded up in the building. “The biggest problem, Dad, is that there shouldn’t be politics in the classroom. ... I may just sit in my seat. As far as I’m concerned, that’s the least intrusive of the choices I’ve been given,” Jacob said, according to his father. So Jacob stayed in his seat. About an hour after his lone act of civil disobedience, he was handed the out-of-school suspension for March 15.”

Lil’ I’m So Special should have gone to the study hall as he was told to do.

This is proof the walkouts are fake.
If you MUST participate, it isn’t real.

You’re absolutely correct about the protest itself being wrong. People are not paying school taxes in order to promote the social cause of the moment.

I’m a veteran teacher. And I’ll bet you that 3/4 of the teachers in that school were against the protest. But they must follow orders. Sure, a few teachers might be Social Justice Warriors. But the majority have material to cover, and tests to prepare for. They’d rather be in class. I know I would.

So yeah, the district was wrong for allowing the protest on school time. But the kid was also wrong by not following a reasonable safety rule. If you don’t want to protest, report to the study hall.

Now, if the kid was told that he must go to the protest...that would be lawsuit time.

The nazis demand you show up to take part in Kristallnacht or it’s off to the death camps.

I wonder if any students who left school and skipped the protests were ratted on by the little Eichmanns and punished by the schools?

You’re mistaking study hall for d-hall. Might as well say the gym is the library.

Arkansas students walk out and are given option of swatting with the board of education. I’m liking that principal.

I drove by the local high school on Wednesday morning. Only high school in town, 4-year, in a town of about 35,000. It is Spring Break here and there were about 75 people demonstrating in front of the high school.....nearly all adults. Maybe 10 students bothered to come to the protest, as they weren’t in school already?

Life is unfair. How we deal with that unfairness defines us.

I did not say he was wrong in his belief, only that he should have known there would be consequences of his action.

He choose to stay in a empty classroom rather then go to a room that was being provided. The school punished him for that, not his views.

It is sort of like walking across the street in the cross walk with the green light and ignoring the speeding car coming at you because you are in the right. Sometimes you have to just get out of the way of the speeding car.
