MIAMI (CBSMiami) Florida International Universitys massive new pedestrian bridge collapsed Thursday afternoon in West Miami-Dade.
The bridge, located at 109th Ave and 8th Street, collapsed on a number of cars.
There are reports of numerous people injured in the collapse. At least one person was taken as a trauma alert to the hospital, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
The 950-ton bridge went up on Saturday. It was then lowered into its final position, just west of 109th Avenue that day.
The main span was built next to Southwest 8th Street.

Just heard report on Fox that the red crane dropped something onto the bridge that caused the collapse.

It was built/molded on the side of the road, then lifted with a crane across the road..............They wheeled it into place.
And there does appear to be some rebar in there ... and very thick cables. But not enough to support the weight of the bridge over a 6 lane divided roadway.

At least the Tacoma Narrows Bridge stood for 24 years before finally succumbing to the effects of wind-induced harmonic coupling.

Thanks for the answer. It’ll be interesting what the NTSB comes up with on the mix and quality of materials. And why no rebar?

A witness on Fox is saying that a piece of equipment fell from a crane onto the bridge and that is what caused the collapse. And he says the crane was moved after the accident. And the guy has several photos from the scene.
I guess time will tell.

I’m sure we’ll find out where this concrete came from. If it was to spec. And if the specs were nuts.

That may be so, but you know how this slimy crap seeps and oozes everywhere. You think Engineering Departments are immune? If this woman is in charge of educating the educators, you KNOW what they will be taught to teach. People like this should be kept a million miles away from all engineering departments.
You should hear how my sister tells of the continuing dumbing-down of simple K-12 math education due to this crap. Those kids are woefully unprepared to go to ANY college, yet they are all PUSHED into "STEM" fields these days and all of them are told they are smart enough to go to college.

Normalizing mistakes in engineering? Please don't build any bridges.

Yeah ... suspension was supposed to be a huge part of this bridge. Here's a model of the project.

“Just heard report on Fox that the red crane dropped something onto the bridge that caused the collapse.”
I’m listening to it right now. They’re showing a picture of a crane with nothing on the cable. If it’s anything like the jobs I’ve been on, there should be a “headache ball” at the end of the cable with a hook. I suppose if the headache ball detached, it would end up becoming a giant wrecking ball.

Yes, every photo of every suspension bridge I’ve ever seen has the towers erected first, then the catenary cables are strung, then the vertical cables installed, and lastly the bridge roadway installed. It seems here that maybe they were trying to design a self-supporting structure and adding the cables later? Doesn’t make sense.
Kind of like building the roof of your house in mid-air first, then installing the foundation and walls under it.
