MIAMI (CBSMiami) Florida International Universitys massive new pedestrian bridge collapsed Thursday afternoon in West Miami-Dade.
The bridge, located at 109th Ave and 8th Street, collapsed on a number of cars.
There are reports of numerous people injured in the collapse. At least one person was taken as a trauma alert to the hospital, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
The 950-ton bridge went up on Saturday. It was then lowered into its final position, just west of 109th Avenue that day.
The main span was built next to Southwest 8th Street.
Looks like they swung the bridge deck over the street and installed it but didn’t install the suspension elements yet. Turns out it needed the suspension elements to support its own weight.
Mexican concrete?
This happens in the third world, not in the U.S. of A.
Funny...the Democrats yammer nonstop for DECADES about "crumbling infrastructure" which means OLD stuff. Now, with the Social Justice Warriors and Affirmative Action taking over engineering education, even the new stuff crumbles before the paint is dry. How are Democrats going to yammer about "crumbling infrastructure" now?
They got what they wanted in K-12 education where "2 + 2 = Whatever you feel like today, Johnny, because there is no wrong answer. If 5 makes you feel good today, then the answer is 5."
The lawsuits are going to bury this one.
Bridge structure was supposed to be inspected by @BDITest who deleted this tweet after the FIU bridge collapsed https://t.co/awxQzSEM6u
Illegal labor crews too?
They got a traffic tie-up now I betcha
Oh my goodness...whew. that's not a quote I would want attributed to me about something that collapsed less than a week after being opened.
Depending on engineer’s strength requirements, typical slump is between 4.5” and 6”
I wonder what Debbie Wasserman Schultz says, she probably bragged about securing the funds for this great project - just have to check Lexis-Nexis.
Mine too.
You are correct. The bridge supports do not appear to have been constructed yet. Yet some idiot decided to put an unsupported concrete span over an active highway.
Yep.
Yep
Big Government incompetence running amuck in Southern Florida.
WTH did they use for rebar, then? Recycled plastic?
This will be studied for a long time to come. Not quite “galloping gertie” at the Pacific Narrows, but close. Hate to be anyone associated with that right now, contractors, suppliers, anything and everything will be scrutinized. Lots of CYA going on right now.
When I was stationed in South Korea I vaguely recall just a few years earlier a spate of bridge failures.
Seems the contractors cheated, and/or used seawater to mix the portland and make concrete. Lasted longer than a week though.
