MIAMI (CBSMiami) Florida International Universitys massive new pedestrian bridge collapsed Thursday afternoon in West Miami-Dade.
The bridge, located at 109th Ave and 8th Street, collapsed on a number of cars.
There are reports of numerous people injured in the collapse. At least one person was taken as a trauma alert to the hospital, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
The 950-ton bridge went up on Saturday. It was then lowered into its final position, just west of 109th Avenue that day.
The main span was built next to Southwest 8th Street.
The bridge was designed by FIGG Bridge Engineers and built by MCM. Barnhart Crane and Rigging operated the Self-Propelled Modular Transporters that placed the bridge on its permanent supports.
Apparently the bridge was to use some kind of new cement which “cleaned itself” and the bridge was designed to withstand a cat 5 hurricane and last more than 100 years.
I think someone got some splaining to do.
Yep and Yep...................
It’s now a really expensive sidewalk.
Trump was right, our infrastructure is collapsing around us, even the brand new stuff - sheesh. 8 years of the Obama leading from behind and accompanying recession and the country has gone to hell.
As a public university all that information should be public record. You might try a search for the bidding or RFP documents.

Apparently the engineering firm was FIGG Bridge Group:

Indeed. Something has to be done about assault bridges.
Every single kid gets steered toward college ... most go ... someone else pays ...
The construction company was Munilla Construction Management, with the engineering done by FIGG
MCM's website, http://www.mcm-us.com/, is currently down.
MCM, the Manila family, have lots of political connections in the Miami area, I found in some of their awards and protests in the quick search made mention of their political donations and the connection to winning their contracts.
I don't know how much longer it took to put the suspension elements in. I wonder if building the structure without suspension load, and then putting it under suspension load, played a role in the structure failing.
They’re out of business. Last I heard, the CEO went into hiding somewhere in Colorado . . .
Agree completely; should have shored up that portion of the bridge until the cables were installed and tensioned properly. It looks like the design was proper, but allowing that size of a pre-stressed concrete beam (950 tons) support its own weight without temporary shoring was the cause.
Since the bridge wasn’t due to be completed, who the f*ck gave to keep the road open in a construction zone? Should have directed vehicular traffic on a by-pass road.
This is FUBAR in the full meaning of the term.
An earlier article on the bridge.

I assume a “TIGER” grant means several factors weigh in favor of a firm obtaining a contract. These probably include minority owned business and use of local laborers. Not that these would be the final determination of awarding the work.
Indeed.
Does anyone really need an assault bridge?!
They clearly cannot be used to hunt.
Agree. There had to be some inspector that gave the go-ahead for traffic to pass under the bridge in its current state, yes?
Chinese cement?
I doubt that FIGG is the one at fault here. They built the I-35W replacement bridge in Minneapolis, the new Jordan Bridge in the Virginia Tidewater area and the new Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Those are all still standing.
