Bay Area members of Congress move to protect work permits for H-1B visa holders’ spouses

Six Bay Area members of Congress have signed onto a letter asking the Department of Homeland Security to scrap a plan to prevent spouses of H-1B visa holders from obtaining work permits.

The department in December announced the plan, citing President Donald Trump’s “Buy American and Hire American” executive order, and said it would carry out the plan this year. The work-permit program for H-1B holders’ spouses was initiated in 2015 under former President Barack Obama.

There are plenty of Americans who are very skilled in matters connected to computers and technology. There are more than a few Indians who are as well.I don't give a rat's hindquarters that the Indians are willing to work for $10/hr.Get them out and pay the Americans a decent wage.

“I think they should not allow spouses to work. They shouldn’t even allow them to come to the country.”

They should be treated just like they used to treat migrant farm workers, you work until the crops are picked and then go back to Mexico. No wives or children needed or allowed.

Then the employers are breaking existing laws! H1-B visa application by an employer requires them to show there is a shortage of US citizens with those skills. Prosecute the EMPLOYERS!

On the other hand chain migration is a 100 times bigger problem in terms of welfare handed out to them. I have relatives who came her as chain migrants, and since they were over age 65, are receiving social security checks for life. And receiving gov’t paid healthcare. And food stamps. And other benefits!

At least H1-B visa people have jobs and pay taxes. And it is a temporary visa. Chain immigrants are PERMANENT.

You prefer H1B’ers to illegals —I agree.

I have worked at MULTIPLE Silicon Valley tech companies and I can tell you in most cases they PREFER H1B people to Americans.

I have also known H1B people to start the green card paperwork at the earliest opportunity:

Most of them have no intention of returning to China/India/Sh*tHoleIstan.

Most of them are walking encyclopedias regarding social security, etc in short order and have packets in their own language describing the fastest ways to get the parents over and onto benefits.

I had one 100-year-old patient brought over from China 100% unable to speak or understand English on round-the-clock hospital care, with the bill footed completely by Uncle Sugar. Luckily I can read much Chinese.

How is this helping America..?

Another time I helped a medical clinic intended for indigent Native Americans in the Mission District “make their numbers” by treating 100% Mexican people “Well, they ARE brown” or some such.

They weren’t “Indians” by an stretch at all.

Totally fraudulent.

The audacity of these scumbag congress critters. We live in the era of American American people haters: If you are not flushed down the toilet or sold of for body parts after abortion, you will be replaced by a foreigner one way or another legal or illegal. God bless America!!!

So you prefer 30 million chain migrants (in last 25 years) who were sponsored by a relative possessing a green card? A very large percentage of them are on welfare! I have relatives receiving lifetime welfare benefits. They are simply using the existing laws.

But you are against a H1-B visa person who has a job and pays ALL US taxes? How myopic!

Yep. I thought the whole H1-B thing is supposed to be temporary? They also should not be allowed to apply for permanent status while on their H1-B. I think they should have to leave the country for that.

I can’t argue for our immigration system. It sucks.

I like New Zealand’s immigration policies. You either bring with you $1.5 Million to invest in NZ, or have a skill in short supply in NZ and have a job offer in NZ.

The corporate lobby runs the US Congress. All career politicians must depend on the big donors! Which is why they talk pro-middle class before election, then take orders from their really big donors without whom they can not stay elected.

Which was the main reason I was immediately in the Trump camp knowing he did not need big donors.

It sort of sounds like the fault of people who vote for the sake of sheer ad volume.

I pretty much agree with you.
BUT
Australia does it your way and it is being inundated by legal immigrant Chinese and Indians with educations. If I were Aussie I would not want my country to become a Hindu-Chinese colony. They have massive numbers of Chinese students in their universities and they all want to remain.

That is how "free" enterprise system works. They can choose workers whom they prefer. Corporations are there to pursue justice or patriotism. They exist and survive by making profits. I imagine they like the cheap foreign labor over US citizens.

May be Australia has less immigrants on welfare, and fewer crimes committed by immigrants (legal & illegal). My wife used to work at a larger medical practice in California as billing manager, and in her observation half the patients were on MediCal and many coulod not speak English.

NZ requires immigrants to pass English proficiency test. US requires no English, no education, no wealth from chain immigrants.

As for Indians and Chinese taking over Australian immigration, fully 1/3 of world’s population is either Chinese or Indian. And they push education in those countries. Expect more of them all over.

Uh..that's how it works in AMERICA. There's no H1b equivalent in Japan or in most other Asian countries. You can be an Engrish teachya and that's about it, and that's only because they can demonstrate 100% that natives can't do that job.

The US FORMALLY speaking has that as a requirement --that companies must somehow demonstrate that they tried and tried for a native, but found find no one and so fell back on an H1B as a last resort-- but my experience is that that gets thwarted at every turn.

It sounds perverse but in Silicon Valley there are numerous presentations on how to NOT hire an American --legally.

That means Americans are actively brought in and interviewed for positions with the company intent A PRIORI to NOT hire them; that they are fully assessed, then eliminated on some niggling technicality:

"Oh well..! Shucks, we sure *tried*..! (quick wink at HR Prez) So now we give it to Hakeem, from Hyderabad..."

A lot of interviews in California are FAKE; you are being brought in to pad their statistics.

Mostly that and shortage of candidates who do not require big contributors. As an example, Ted Cruz receives $32 million from just 4 big contributors in 2016. I would bet he received far less from FR and other conservatives.

Democrats figure if Americans won’t vote for them, Democrats will bring in people who will.
