The Theory of Everything, a fine film, told his story from the point of view of his Christian wife/girlfriend. He was a professed atheist all his life, even though she showed him God’s love in action as he grew weaker and weaker physically.
Hopefully he repented before the end. He was a smart man.

Models are simplifications to match our brain size and capacity to understand. It's important to always remember that while models are sometimes highly useful they are never the whole story. It is certain our interpretations of scripture are at least partly wrong as are our interpretations in science.
Groupthink in both science and religion is used to propagate them, often for the financial gain of others. Neither needs groupthink though and we should always be suspicious of anyone claiming certainty or demonizing others that do not agree.

it’s the parable of the vineyard laborers. The bottom line being that it’s not our place to sit in the judgement seat. But to show the came kind of mercy, compassion and tolerance that we’ve been shown by the father towards us. So you’ve been working in the vineyard all of your life. If hawking is welcomed in covered by the blood, are we going to be the ones to complain to the owner that we should get twice the reward?
