Trump speaks with Larry Kudlow about joining White House as economic adviser
Washington Post ^ | March 12, 2018 | Robert Costa, Damian Paletta and Josh Dawsey

Media personality Larry Kudlow, a loquacious and energetic advocate of low taxes and free trade, has emerged as a leading candidate to replace Gary Cohn as director of the White House’s National Economic Council, people briefed on the process said.

President Trump has spoken twice in recent days with the longtime CNBC commentator about succeeding Cohn, according to three people familiar with the discussions, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

While the phone conversations with Kudlow — one Sunday and another Monday — were favorable, Trump has yet to make a final decision about an offer, the people said. Still, Kudlow is now widely seen within the West Wing as a finalist for one of the most powerful economic posts in the administration.

I think Kudlow would be a great choice and would be able to help Trump to MAGA.

Kudlow is kinda odd on his radio talk shows. Gut reaction is to change the station when I come across his show. Can’t really say why.

Kudlow is a great economist, but is not really meant to be a talk show host.

He would be a great asset to Trump.

Please no. What a freaking mistake to hire Free Traitor™ Kudlow, definitely not winning.

We need out sure our economists and import some from China, S. Korea and Taiwan to teach us how to win a trade war.

Not a perfect fit (he opposes tariffs), but Trump could do far worse than picking Kudlow.

He is a little too fond of cheap labor importation.

Opposing tariffs is no little thing. He is a free Traitor™!!! We need a protectionist economist( We may have to import one)

One answer...NO.

If he was for Fair trade then I would say yes. But he is for Free trade. At least thats what I get out of his past comments.

No. Not a little thing. But what make you think Trump would cave to him?

Kudlow was one of Trump’s top economic advisors during the 2016 campaign. His opposition to tariffs didn’t bother either man.

Larry Kudlow would know going in, being a free trader, that he would have an uphill battle getting such policies included in the President's economic agenda, but I think Kudlow has integrity and skill, and might make a good counterbalancing influence to help keep the President from adopting policies which might be too protectionist.

Larry Kudlow certainly wouldn't be a yes man, and it's a sign of a strong leader for President Trump to include such as a talented advisor someone who isn't dogmatically aligned with the President's economic thinking. I think Kudlow would be a good choice in that context.

I've always liked Larry Kudlow, and I'm intrigued that he's being considered, and if President Trump wants him for the job, I'm all for it. I trust the President's instincts far more than seeing any need for adherence to economic policy which is purely protectionist. There certainly need to be elements of free trade included when the trading partners are suitable—such flexibility is eminently preferable to submitting to rigid dogma.

I have heard that President Trump likes to hear opposing views.

“He would be a great asset to Trump.”

As long as he took his opinions with a grain of salt. Trump, after all if a billionaire. Kudlow is not...

Isn’t Kudlow a cheap labor stooge? And why the hell does Goldman Gary even need to be replaced? Just abolish the stupid position.

I don’t think so. I don’t think he would be loyal to Trump, from what I picked up at a speech of his during the campaign. Last thing the president needs is another disloyal son of bitch.

Kudlow is fantastic for supply side economics, none better. Also pro-trade as others have mentioned, but that doesn't matter too much since Trump will do what he wants on trade. Kudlow is not great on immigration, but likes Trump's hard line on reform in exchange for DACA+. The main problem with Kudlow is he is entwined in the lame stream media where nobody has any principles other than hating Trump. He stays for the paycheck but he hasn't done himself any favors.

The bottom on Kudlow is he is probably the best pick to MAGA which is what matters to most of the electorate.

I agree, there is no need for an economic adviser when you already have Mnuchin at Treasury, Ross at Commerce and Lighthizer at Trade Negotiator, etc.

Why replace Cohn with Kudlow if they both share the same view on tariffs??

Also, I have qualms with Kudlow’s soft stance on immigration.
Plus, he frequently has praise for McShame, calling him a good friend and great veteran, etc.
